4 Speed Getrag Question

I have a question about my 4 speed Getrag from the '83 240D that's now behind my OM617. Everything works perfectly except it wants to grind going into reverse. Given that it's fine into first I don't think the clutch is dragging and it doesn't try to "pull" when stopped in gear with the clutch depressed. I realize that there are no synchros in reverse and maybe that's the issue.

My solution may be to start the engine with the trans in reverse when backing is needed but I wondered if anyone else has had this issue.

Thanks

Dan

Always? If you start with it in 1 and clutch then go into R without moving the vehicle it grinds?

Clutch is dragging.

So far that seems to be the case. I only have a couple of driving events so I'll need to try some more scenarios to see what I get.

Thanks again

Put it in a forward gear first, then w/o the vehicle rolling, go to reverse.
This will stop the gear from turning,

I don`t believe reverse has a synchro.

Only use pull-through parking spots

(Sorry I had to)

definitely no synchro in reverse (originally I said first but meant reverse). It is rare for transmissions to have it in first I believe but I am pretty sure my big dodge has it.

Actually, in cars made in the past 20-30 years, I think synchronized first gear has become pretty much the standard.

FYI

This transmission should have four synchronizer rings.

x2
A1152623034

x2
A1152622934

All too often, the reverse issue is exacerbated by incorrect fit between pilot bearing and input shaft.
This puts excess force = shifting the input shaft to the rear = causing side binding on the gear line.

I suspect Mr. Hunter may be close to the truth. I had a hard time getting the pilot bearing in there (remember, there is a 1mm difference which I did my best to rectify) but it did go in pretty snugly. Hard to know how much snug is the factory tight fit and how much is too tight. If that proves to be the issue I think I'll just have one turned in bronze. Next winter! I can run it like it is for this season.

And thanks for your input!

Dan

Maybe Tom - but us old guys get crafty (age and guile beat youth and ability). And we're still at it!
