grinding gears, 1-2 shift pattern
my car has a 240D flywheel between the 617 turbo and iron box 4-speed, and the very early chassis clutch pressure system. with the clutch fully disengaged, shifting rapidly from 1st into 2nd, both my past and current transmissions have ground gears. if i take the time to shift from 1st into neutral and then from neutral into 2nd, there is no problem. none of the other manual shift cars i've driven have had this behavior, so i mean to ask, is it normal?

No, sounds like the syncro-mesh is worn out for 2nd gear.

Our 80 240D will do that shifting into 2nd. I hesitate in the shift, and she goes in ok.
We do have 374k on the trans, and things do wear out. I was searching last night for MB synchros, and didn`t find any. Charlie

Syncro gears for sure.
My truck does the same exact thing. I recall reading a few hears back that the 1st-2nd gear synchros are almost always the first to wear out.

A dragging clutch is one possible cause, too light a trans oil will do this also. And the trans could just be wearing out , shift slower and it will continue to work for quite a while.

Going to have to stop all that speed shifting visualizing that you are in a Corvette.

I agree with the clutch as well as the synchromesh - but it is also worth considering rod lengths - alignment of rod positions in neutral (bolt special tool through the holes in the shifter out put) - rod bushings - gear box oil type and level (!) - and the condition of the shifter before you start taking the gearbox to pieces...
