Tune up

I will be taking my 82 300d to my mechanic this week to have a tune up performed. Beside from the obvious changing of all fluids and filters, valve and timing adjustments, what else should I have done?

Thanks,

Drew

How many miles on the car? And how many miles since the last service? What was done at the last service? There are things like the timing chain that ought to be done at certain intervals so we need more information to give you good advise.

Am I the only one who thinks "taking the car to my mechanic" is an odd concept? J/K - but there are a lot of DIYers on here.

Dan

Odd for this forum Dan but

we have a distorted view. There are probably more people out there like Cruzer that we never hear from.

As with Harley Davidsons, I suspect many of us OM617 wrenchers think we are great mechanics when actually we don't know Jack compared to the professionals. It is a tribute to the machine that it keeps running in spite of our amateur maintenance.

Tune up on a turbo diesel MB often requires opening up and cleaning the various fittings and controls that lead to the ALDA, adjusting the accelerator linkage, inspecting glow plugs, testing fuel pressure, replacing hoses, inspecting brakes, belts, accessories, and filters. Injectors may need rebuilding or replacement, timing chain inspection, may need replacing,
