84 300D.... It's a sad day

Running to pick up my kids today. I was coasting with it idling getting ready to make a turn and it started knocking, I pulled into the parking lot and it was knocking pretty bad so I shut it down. I pulled the valve cover and everything seems good on the top end.... which doesn't look to good for the bottom. Fluids were all good....

Anyone got an extra diesel motor laying around they don't know what to do with...

Don't have a spare motor but just for question sake, what is the mileage on the motor? Do you think it could have jumped time a bit or did you happen to fuel up recently (possible bad fuel??)

Trying not to think the worst......

Check them!

It sounds and feels pretty bad when the engine is dancing in there.

Could also be a bad injector or fuel filters. They can make sudo knocking sounds....

Could be a Vacuum Pump Failure. You could drain the Oil and drop the Pan and see what is in the Bottom of the Pan.

If you find something Steel in the Pan pull the Vacuum Pump and take a look.

Parts of the Vacuum Pump can fall into thel Timing Chain and cuase that knocking when the it gets knocked out of timing.
sometimes the above causes a failure that cannot be fixed other time it can be fixed.

While the Oil Pan is off take a close look at the Oil Pump Chain Tensioner and the little Snap Ring that holds it in place.

My question What in particular causes vacuum pump failure?

Thanks for the ideas, it's still sitting in the parking lot, probably going to trailer it back to the house Saturday.

199xxx or 189xxx, had it for a year, have done a couple oil changes, i noticed it was thin when i checked it about a week ago(not super bad) and planned on changing it last weekend but didn't get around to it. It's never been low on any fluids.

when i pulled the valve cover chain looked good, top end looked good, nothing had excessive movement, no sign of anything broken that may be dropping a valve into a piston..... it's so consistent i doubt it's a motor mount...

I just ordered a spring compressor to do the front end, always seems to work that way for me, i commit to fixing something up and wham LOL.

I have built several motors over the years but checking prices this thing seems pretty expensive to work on compared to a small block ford or chevy. I think maybe another car might be in order, maybe a SD or a SDL if i can find one then part the old girl out still jumping the gun until i get her home...

I plan on dropping the pan when i get it home, is it possible to see the whole bottom end with the pan removed in the car? sorry if that's a dumb question but other than just changing oil and looking at what i was going to order for the front end i haven't had to go under her yet.

Beg, borrow or buy an inspection camera (HFT has cheap units that work), and use it when you drop the lower pan. With that you can see most everything without yanking the engine. Good luck.

I know exactly how you felt when you heard that sound, because something like that has happened to me. Three times. Each time with a different cause. None of which was a pooched motor.

On mine it was:

1 - broken woodruff key/harmonic balancer failure (known issue on late 1970s OM617s, less common on later engines)
2 - failed bearing in alternator (unbelievably loud)
3 - IP internal failure (again, sounded exactly like internal engine mechanical failure)

Before you do anything else and pull anything apart, you may want to post a video of the noise, just in case someone can give you a heads-up right away.

How about using a mechanic's stethoscope/piece of hose to try to nail down the noise?
