Mono wiper slapping trim at left and right
 

I was driving 2 days ago in a light rain, maybe even had my wipers on intermittent but I can't remember, and I heard a WHAP, WHAP, WHAP every time the blade came back to the driver's side, as though the blade was 1/2" too long for its own good.

I pulled off to check to see what was wrong with it, I pulled and pushed the blade, thinking it had come forward too much but it seemed tight. I drove on and the problem seemed nearly magically fixed (though I don't think the blade budged at all when I played with it, maybe I did it some good), however it does hit the trim slightly on the right side.

Any suggestions? Is the wiper blade retracting shaft coming out a bit too much? I'm using a Rain X blade. I would have gone with a Bosch blade, but the blade that was supposed to fit from Advanced auto, didn't fit, and almost nobody carried the right blade so I went with the Rain X blade.

I noticed mine doing the same thing...but I have the beam style blade on it, and it hits the trim at the top edge of the blade. I need to sand down the plastic end a bit to give more clearance.

...Or get a standard style wiper blade.

The Bosch Icon series fits and works perfectly in both my 124 and 210. I had previously used one of the lesser Bosch wipers that according to their fit guide, was supposed to be correct for the 124 but it hit the trim like you describe.

Yes they are spendy but you only need 1...I get the funny looks from the checkout guys when I show up needing only 1 blade.

Both advance and sprawl mart said 24", lies utter lies I tell you had to return one. 22" seems right.

I lined up the wiper arms of an 87 and a 90+ model years. There was a slight length difference of about 3/8 to 1/2 inch between the two. On one the car 24" inch blade worked and it did not work on the other - just enough difference to whack the trim. I needed to swap out the longer armed motor and I replaced it with a shorter arm so now the 24" works on all my 124s.

Until you can find a shorter arm, or shorten the arm you have, you are probable stuck with using 22", not driving in the rain, or living with the whack.

I don't remember which model year was shorter to begin with; I've swapped out motors too often to keep track.

Yeah come to think of it I did the same thing on my 124 - found a 93 in the JY and swapped in its wiper motor. The arm is definitely a tad shorter on the 2nd gen 124, but all the other mounts are the same.

I was in there because the blower motor was squeaking. I had to remove the wiper motor on the 93 and ended up keeping it and swapping it in as well.

I am almost positive I am running 22" Icons on both the 210 and the 124.

The pin on the wiper arm is offset so it is possible to fit the arm the wrong way around and have maybe half an inch or more length available.

The wiper blade has a metal crimped fitting and this should be nearest the center of the car.
