Exhaust options
Hi all,
I will be looking to swap over the exhaust soon, planning on a 3" catback, thinking a single backbox with maybe subtle DTM tips. One thing I do want to ask is the interchangeability of the saloon vs estate backboxes. The reason why I am looking to change the rear box is due to the fact that the pipe goes from the engine down to the nearside of the car, enters a HUUUUGE rear box which goes all the way along the rear of the car and then 180 bend at the end and exits on the near side again. I am actually tempted to simply remove the backbox and attach an exhaust tip on the end - eg de-backbox it. I did notice that the saloon E300 have a much smaller box which I believe is a straight through as stock box anyway, I do want to go with a very subtle exhaust and am tempted to just have the exhaust tips pointing down to the ground. I am planning on fitting a exhaust cutout pipe soon though which would dump exhaust from the downpipe unsilenced for drag runs, then close up and run though the stock system on the way home. Does anyone know the stock pipe diameter as it might just be worth going for the exhaust cutout route and then run the stock system 95% of the time. As its diesel its being silenced by the cat and the turbo, although the straightpiped cars do sound really good. Anyone fitted a cutout pipe before on theirs?

Year, make and model might help people respond. I'd like a larger exhaust for more power- but I don't want my car any louder than it already is. If it's less noisy that'd be great- I just want more power. I have a 1984 300TD with many modifications.

I am thinking it might be easiest to just run a stock system but just have an exhaust cutout valve just after the downpipe so I can run either fully stock or no exhaust. I think the issue is the fact that I would be wanting to go for a 3" system rather than whatever size bore is standard. Another option could be to run a 3" system but simply have large midboxes, I believe most of the mercedes ones are straight through anyway. I want to keep the stealthy look so I am still thinking hidden tailpipes. Here are the options I am thinking:

Rumor has it the aero turbine muffler ($100-$150ish) is straight through but has good reviews on noise reduction.

I won't be having any exhaust tips showing as they aren't showing on the stock system, just trying to find a balance between performance and stealth, I guess with a very large straight through muffler you would get all of the flow without the extra noise. As its an estate there is plenty of room back there, I think removing all of the other silencers along the way makes sense, although I could always run 2 smaller mufflers instead of 1 larger one.

Every time I fire up the S-10 I'm AMAZED at how quiet it is with absolutely NO exhaust system (check my build thread - I'm not exaggerating!). Guess what I'm saying is that I don't think muffling will be much of an issue.
If you look at hot rod sources you'll find all sorts of remote cut-outs, most electrically operated. A friend has a pair on a V8 and they work well and seal when not in use. He got his online but I don't have the manufacturer. A quick trip to Speedway Motors' website should get you started. Dan |

Straight pipes sound great on this car:

I was looking at exhaust cutouts but it might just be worth running the car all the time with the exhaust setup I want rather than switching between the 2. I might have an issue with the MOT though as if I just go with a straight pipe from the mid pipe it might not be classed as a full system and fail. The same is true with the cat, the cat has to be there if it was fitted as standard on the car. I will have a look into some ideas, I want to keep things as simple as possible. The current exhaust system at the back I can see has been repaired slightly so I might just use the current stock system and simply cut the backbox off and then reattach a straight through one instead - or indeed keep it removed depending on the noise level. I am aware that it wouldn't be that loud compared to a petrol car, however if you can hear its slightly sportier than it isn't as stealthy as it could be.
