Engine Ticking

I have a 1982 mercedes 240d. Recently my engine started making a ticking sound. Its not extremely loud i didnt notice it till somebody standing outside my car pointed it out. you cant hear it while sitting in the car. It sounds like its coming from the top end specifically the valve cover. Its not a very deep tone like a rod knock it almost sounds like a marble ratteling around in a metal can. It doesnt do it until its warmed up. My first thought was a valve issue. Any help is appreciated.

Could be intermediate shaft / vacuum pump / oil pump drive to intermediate shaft

Make a video if you can - sometimes that helps

This is the shaft that sits between the timing device and the injector pump (IP)

See

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/204187-what-particular-causes-vacuum-pump-failure-4.html

For example

...the non turbo OM61X engines have a drive from the intermediate shaft down to the oil pump that also can rattle about. So crank turns - drags chain - chain turns timing device (after turning camshaft) intermediate shaft turns IP and turns oil pump shaft

If that is the issue will my timing chain be loose and possibly damaged? I have a video of my car running but it wont let me post it.

also i noticed it doesnt do it at higher rpm's. If im driving then come to a stop and let it idle it takes a minute to start making the noise.

Best way to handle video is to upload to YouTube and then just provide the link to that.

There is an unlikely relationship between the bushings in either the oil drive or the intermediate shaft being worn and because of that the timing chain is done for...

...it is more likely that all of the parts have just gotten worn because they have been used.

Tackle one thing at a time.

I would also try cracking the injector lines open one at a time. Worn injectors can make some odd noises which appear to be coming from something else.

If one of the injectors is worn the ticking should stop once you loosen the nut.

So while the engine is running loosen that nut on the fuel line? And do this with each cylinder one at a time?
