W124 door latch question

While spending some time lubricating the inside of my drivers door I engaged the door latch while the door was open so I could move the door lock up and down.

When I was finished I pulled the door handle (with the lock in the unlocked position) and nothing happened using either the interior or exterior handle. I expected the latch would spring back to the open position. After fiddling with it for a bit i found the pulling slightly on the door latch mechanism while actuating a door handle would cause the door latch to pop back into the open position.

My question is whether this is by design, i.e. there has to a small amount of pressure on the door latch for them to move. Or should the latch spring back to open on its own without any assitance (meaning my latches are sticking).

Should snap back by itself.
Must be sticking or has a broken spring.
