W123 Cabin Air Stinks!

Just bought an 84 300D from a forum member, and he forewarned me it stank when you turn the blower motor on high. Drove it home last night, and Lance is an honest guy, wow, what a bizarre funk.

It smells like rotting leaves maybe. Where does the W123 draw air in for the cabin air, and where would you recommend I look for decaying crud to clean out.

I'd pull the blower to start with. I had an old ford truck that stank horribly with the blower on. It had a rotting mouse nest in the blower. It's not too bad to pull, drop the passenger side kick panel and it should be right there.

It would have been impressive had I made the 1,261 mile drive to that Lance, last night.

No, Lancearino.

The air intake comes from the middle part of the gutter in front of the windscreen. You need to remove a wiper arm and then the little bayonet fittings that hold the cover in place. Be aware - it is easy to bend the cover plate as it is slightly under the front screen rubber and it would rather be left alone...

it will be easier to clean and vet the gutter area from the engine bay side, than to remove the blower and airbox from the dash, so i would start there first.

As Stretch said. After removing the bayonet fittings, gently lift the cover, it has a sticky foam under it. slowly lift as the foam releases it`s grip.
You do not want to tweek the cover.

The Wiper Motor and Arm assy is under this plate. good time to clean this area up and check the ball sockets.

I recommend pulling the whole HVAC out and cleaning it thoroughly.
Here is what mine looked like.
