How to check California smog?

Hi folks,

Been a while since I was here, looking to make an offer on a Texas 2005 E320 cdi and I would be driving it back home to California.

However I checked the DMV and I need to find out if its legal smog wise to bring into CA, I recall on my old 300D there were CA versions with different smog equipment than the rest of the US.

How can I check this?

Thanks!

Chris

I don't think any diesel vehicles older than 2006 need to be smogged in California, regardless of whether it's from here or not

Go to the Ca DMV web site and click on smog requirements.

Wrong info. No smog for diesel cars older than 1997. 1998 or newer diesel cars need smog. 2005 and 2006 MBZ diesel was not sold in CA as it was not legal then. However, it can be 'imported' to CA now and you should have no problem having it smog.

My boss has a 2005 diesel truck that doesn't require smog, so I'm not sure how that works

I did some searching on this and found other people discovered something similar:

Should be fine. It's just an OBDII check and a test for visible smoke IIRC.

If your car smokes, put some HPR in it, and the smoke will be gone.

How to check California smog?

Im vaguely remembering 98.5 for some models. A dodge cummins I had.

Its just a visual smoke test. Throw some cleaner in. Turn your pump down. Drive away and crank it back up.

Or pick a small shop. And keep going back until it magically passes. I think I got to $270 before I passed...

Edit: Good timing. I don't remember odb II though. But i may not remember.

Medium duty trucks adhere to a different set of regulations.

Plenty of 05-06 CDIs have been imported to California. You should have no problem as long as the CEL is off and no obvious modifications to the engine or emissions equipment.

They will park it in their bay, open the hood, look around a bit, close it and say they are done. No OBDii connections, no tail pipe sniffer.

Pretty silly. Perhaps they will look for "obvious" mods as another poster stated.

You'll have to do it every 2 years.

Diesel Smog Check inspections include a visual, OBD, and visible smoke test. During the visual test, the vehicle is inspected for any non-California Air Resources Board (ARB) approved emission related aftermarket parts.

I didnt notice them open my hood. Regardless, they cant see the bigger elements in the IP or the nozzles in the injector. I pulled the propane out though.

I honestly dont know if i had odb II in that thing. Cant remember. And it was a few years back. So maybe its different now.

Thumbs up Won!

So I sold my old car (mini) at 11:30am, at 3pm I made an offer on this and won:

Mercedes Benz E Class 4DR SDN 3 2L | eBay

2005 Cdi, 78k miles, really nice condition.

Planning on flying down on the 16th to Houston and pick it up, drive it back.

Anything I should check? I already have a transmission dipstick and tabs, so I plan on checking the transmission level etc, oil, water, tires, brakes.

Any advice is appreciated!
