Well, after 32 years

The instrument panel clock on the 83 300D quit working. Any ideas or tips on a fix outside of trying to replace it? I kind of miss it.

Might be nice to replace the mechanism which runs it with a quartz based small battery model... that way even when the car battery was out it would not affect the time...
and might be more accurate than the original.....

The value is not critical. As I recall, I repaired mine by stealing an electrolytic cap from an old car cell phone charger.

Did you click on the link in post#2? then this one?

Repairing Non-Functioning Mercedes-Benz Clocks

Radio Shack part number 272-1028. You will need two of these capacitors, and they only cost around $1.00 each. These are the only parts needed

Found this info in an old thread.

I just did mine, and repainted the needles while I had the cluster out.

second time I have done it, both times Radio shack 3.13$ for two capacitors. And BOTH times I forgot to put the gasket back on before soldering the ground in and had to do it twice.

This Be Nz World thread is most helpful I have found

CLOCK Repair

heres a new pic, used paint from Daw_two on this forum

My W201 had the specs printed on the side of the caps. I think it just had the Farad rating stamped. I used 32 volt DC caps and the same Farad rating and my clock is perfect. I had these caps saved from old TVs I salvaged components from earlier.

General encouragement ahead: replacing the capacitors is phenomenally easy.

It being a rainy weekend in Northern California and yesterday having removed my instrument cluster for easy access to a ground, I decided to give it a crack.
A couple of 100UF 35V capacitors from radioshack ($1.49 a piece) a $4 soldering iron and a small spool of solder ($5) and an hour later the clock is fully functional.

I had no previous experience with soldering. It's not too bad.
The only trick is figuring out which hole is positive and which is negative (fairly obvious, just requires care). Here's a snap of the first capacitor in place on the board, pre solder.

Wow that looks phenomenal... I didn't even consider this when I had the cluster out.
Don't think I can bring myself to pull that cluster again so soon, but this is definitely going on the list.
