1982 240D Alternator/Water Pump Belt Size

Now that my car has over 344000 miles on the odo it is giving my problems left and right.

The battery was not charging and what ending up fixing that was a new alternator.

Good to go for about a week and we get a hail storm in FLORIDA. Car seemed to make it through unharmed until the next morning when it would not start. No glow plug light. Jumped all of the glow plugs with a wire and the car started up. Went through my day and then went to the junk yard and got a new glow plug relay. Take the old one out, turn it over, water comes out. Okay, there's the problem! New one works and I am good to go. That was yesterday.

Today driving along... car is overheating so I turn the heat on in the car, no change. Finally pull over (thank God for the iron heads) and the belt is broken. (Some issue with new alternator and pulley/fan combination)

So now that I put that out there. What size belt do I need for the alternator and water pump? Looking to get one tonight so I can get it going again tomorrow.

Thanks.

Looking at this, it depends which engine # you have, and auto or manual
Transmission.

You will need a belt in the metric size, they fit the pully`s better than an after market inch size.

Yeah, I looked there but it confused me because some of them just said "belt" which does not help much. I have an automatic transmission but will have to look at the number on the engine tomorrow when the sun is back up. Thanks. Are metric belts pretty much online only?

Just dealt with this identical situation yesterday in my manual trans 240D. Cruising along at 60 mph and had just started up a long hill, noticed steam coming out the passenger side front corner at the gap between hood and fender. Looked down at my temp gauge and saw it rocketing up to peg at 120C! Pulled over immediately, raised hood and found the alt/wp belt partially broken up, off the pulley with just a thin edge strip remaining intact for about 1/3 the length. "(thank God for the iron heads)"

It was an 8 mo old Continental belt I got from ahAZ, with about 3,000 miles of use. Conti belt was 13mm X 1030. Went to the NAPA auto in our little farm town and for a $20 bill, got one of their XL 9405 belts which at 13 X 1038 mm was closest they had.

The new belt had identical cross section in the part that contacts the pulley but was taller, so stands proud of the pulleys a bit more. Also, looks to have more reinforcing plies. It fit just fine, and the extra 8mm length didn't cause any problem, still plenty of adjustment left. Again, this was on a manual transmission 240D. Don

Just a bit more info: I checked my records & found I paid a lot less $ for the Continental belt. Checked with NAPA and they sell 2 lines of belts: low cost "power fit" belts priced similar to the Conti belts and "NAPA Belts" for about 3X more $$. Claim to be better quality and last longer. Time will tell, but comparing the old and new belts, it seems likely. Don

I just bought the 10x970 as recommended from Peach Parts for a 1983 240D and it's too tight to go on. Looking for the next size up now.

ive had bad luck with continental belts recently, maybe they've changed their quality control? i'd recommend a dayco top cog, in a 39" size, like a 15390.

So, what’s the deal with the 13x1000 vs 13x1030 belt size?

Am putting my 240d back together after about a year, and I have a 13x1000 belt waiting for it. I had cut and thrown away the old belt a year or so ago... stupid me. Don’t even recall why I did that, think it was because I wanted to remove the fan and knew I was replacing all.

Anyway, removed tension on the alternator, slipped the belt over, cannot get it to fit. Too short. Mine is a 240d with AT, so per the fsm above, it should fit I can’t get it over the wp and alternator pulleys. Another 30mm would make it really easy If think.

Does anyone know why the AT one is specified with a 1000mm while the MT is specified with a 1030mm belt?

Thanks!!
