124 transmission dip tube O ring
Ok I have I hope isolated a fairly large leak in my transmission at the dip tube. I plan on replacing the o ring and would like any advice to assist me with this task. The overnight stain is about 2 plus inches diameter.

I had this same problem with my 190D but my mechanic replaced the o-ring, twice actually. Apparently not the easiest job, I wouldn't know.

I just did that on my 85 300SD 126 for the longest time I was fooled into thinking it was leaking at the return line where it goes into trans. until I really looked close as someone was adding trans fluid I was watching and saw where it leaked. Fairly easy job of taking dipstick tube off and putting new o-ring in there and also I made a gasket at the base and put that in there as extra measure as there was no gasket there and I thought there should be finally no more trans leaks. That one can be a real fooler to locate.

Thanks Yuke! Is there a nut at the base of the dip tube? I just decreased it but never had a chance to have a look yet.

Yes there is a small bolt at the bottom flange and a bolt at the top 13mm that holds tube to rear of intake manifold take those 2 out and whole dip stick tube will lift up and out might have to pry a little at base with screwdriver to get it started. You could try just replaceing o-ring but I replaced ring and made a gasket so I would'nt have to take it off again.

Thanks again Yuke boy cleaning that area around the bottom of the dip tube is a real sun of a gun. I see everything clearly now but have one more question did you drop your pan before replacing the o ring? Seems like that may not be a bad idea just to prevent any dirt from being trapped in the pan? I just hate the thought of doing that since it was not to long ago that I serviced the transmission.

Don't know if the 190 layout is very different, on my 83 300D, I cleaned the area well (scrape, wipe, wire brush, brake clean) than gooped RTV all over it. NO MORE LEAKS!

I also do'nt know the lay out of the 190D but on my 85 300SD it was a fairly simple job and I did not have to drop the pan. Even thou I did have the front end jacked up I did lose about a cup full od trans. oil when I took the tube out I lost the amount that was above the tube before I pulled it so be ready for some drippings.

Well I have been looking and looking at the leak and it now appears to be coming from that big round cap directly behind the dip tube. I think it maybe the servo? The b2 big round cap is at the rear of the transmission. Any idea how to remove and replace the servo cap and reveal? Rjv is a valid option I never thought about.
