Help with Valve Adjustment in NH

Anyone want to come help me through a valve adjustment on my 83 300TD? I have seen it done in the past, and have read about it so many times, but I find myself too timid to go for it alone. I also am finding myself with so little time lately that it would be nice to have someone experienced to help breeze through it.

Help me out and you will be regaled with dinner, beverages, and stories of off-grid homesteading.

I am located in Acworth, NH 03601

Any takers?

Now if only NH meant North Holland I'd be there with bells on!

I am 3.5 hours away. Are you going to the Mt Washington Alt energy summit July 25th? I am thinking of registering (for the first time). If I do, I could bring my Hazet valve wrenches if you can wait that long. Sounds like a fun event.

I'd love to go again, but it is running so ragged now that I don't want to make the trip without an adjustment.

I'm right off rt 91. Well 25 minutes off. Feel free to stop by on your way through!

When (how many miles ago) was the last valve adjustment? How do you know the raggedness is from valves being out of adjustment and not from other causes.

I've adjusted the valve a couple times on my 83. I don't have the thin wrenches, but I've managed anyway.

I probably have less time than you do, so I'm not running up to Acworth, but if you want to come down to MA, we can knock it out in a couple hrs in my garage. I'm near the intersection of Mass Pike and I-495

I'd love to, but my 300d is on the shelf due to a tranny issue, and I'm halfway done putting a motor in my Jeep. I'll check in in a few weeks, hopefully things will slow down.

I assume the raggedness is from valves because I have not performed an adjustment in about 30k miles. It is next on my list of offenders after mostly ruling out fuel issues.

Maybe we could turn this into a workshop if anyone is interested and willing to teach or attend.

Hazet Valve Wrench Head thickness = 0.242

Heyco Valve Wrench Thickness = 0.212

Looks like 1/4" thick Wrenches would be a fine match. Different companies make their wrenches different thicknesses.

If you know someone that has a Belt Sander with a 60 grit or above belt on it it is a fast job to thin a wrench. 180-220 grit also works but tends to grab (unless the Sander is turning real slow) onto the Wrench making it less save to thin the Wrech and also longer time to do it.

I just used my bench grinder on a cheap 9/16" wrench - works fine. Then Channel-loks to hold the springs from turning. I forget what I used for the #3 wrench..... Cheap and effective.

Is anyone interested in leading or attending a workshop for a valve adjustment? It would be great to meet some of you and share your experiences. Let me know and I'll try to make it happen.
