1999 E300TD part identification

So my 1999 E300TD started making a strange random clicking sound at idol about a week ago. Then today while driving it started making a loud screaching belt sound. When I popped the hood I found this part had come unattached and was rubbing against the belt. Please help me identify this part and furthermore please let me know if it is unsafe to drive with this part unattached. Thank you.

That is the tensioner spring, and I would not, I repeat, NOT drive the vehicle until it is replaced. Without that spring, the serpentine belt will be loose, and you will lose your cooling, and alternator. Easy to replace, and no special tools needed.

Thank you for the reply. Can anyone on here post a pic of the tensioner spring correctly installed on the engine so I can figure out how to configure this. Thanks in advance.

As said, the tensioner spring is what is keeping your serpentine belt tight. It seems like over the years the vibrations snapped off the hook on the spring. All that's holding your belt somewhat tight is the tensioner shock, I'd recommend NOT driving the car until you've a replacement spring.

Spring: MB Part #6069930310
Shock: MB Part # 6042000214

This is a video of the procedure to use to change out the belt. The first section shows you the spring and its location. The spring you presently have has the lower hook broken off.

FYI: w210 owners like the myself and Op, this manifested itself as a loud vibration from the front end of the engine. I personally thought the tensioner shock was bad but once I got to it I noticed that there is no tension on the belt. I used a screwdriver to leverage the spring and low and behold the top of it came right out of the sleeve.

An update to this...I bought the part from the dealer and replaced it. Very easy repair. There was initially some vibration and noise at idle after the repair, but substantially less than before the part broke. Since I made the repair the noise and vibration at idle have been getting worse again, and now they are as bad as they were right before the spring broke. Any ideas what could be causing this? Could the shock be failing? Any ways to test the shock?

If the spring broke I would double check the tensioner shock and alternator pulley as well. The alternator pulley has a one way clutch, if it ceases up it will drastically increase belt vibration and beat the crap out of the tensioner parts.
