Craiglist Rant

"300td motor"

At some point someone should be punished for getting my hopes up time and time again, only to disappoint me with that dang rogue "t."

I can't even remember how many times I've been frustrated enough to text/email something to the effect of "Dear sir, please adjust your CL ad. You do not have a 300TD motor...." And yet, the same ads pop up months later with the SAME WRONG DESCRIPTION.

Granted I may not be able to hunt down and destroy all the rogue t's in my area as the number of $1200 617 motors are still pretty large.

Technically they are correct, it is a 300TD MOTOR... it's just not out of a 300TD...

This is his hobby... the reason he's frustrated is that he can't use a cylinder head from a sedan in his wagon. It's more than just an alphabetical obsession.

It's the wrong head because it's not from a 300TD... but the MOTOR is a Turbo Diesel... And it is a 300 series motor... So... The ad is right, just not for anyone looking for a motor to fit their 300TD vehicle...

I know your pain.

No worries here - my '99 E300TD found a CL buyer for full-asking a few years ago. The guy never questioned it either. It'd of sold with it's accurate name of '99 E300DT label in the ad too!

I think we need to at least partially blame Mercedes on this one. It's fully understandable that someone who's not obsessed with these cars would assume that TD stands for turbodiesel (instead of the truth, that the T denotes station wagon).

But...
I don't know how many times I've inquired about 300TDs over the years only to find out they were 300Ds. When I then inform the owner that what they're selling is in fact a 300D, and not a 300TD, they get incredulous and say something to the effect of "well, what the hell do you think the 'T' stands for?!?!?"

Even worse is when I see ratty sedans priced like beautifully-kept wagons, all because of either confusion or deliberate misinformation over the 300D/300TD designation.

It certainly would be easier for us if people understood that not every 300D is naturally-aspirated, not every 300TD is turbocharged, every 300D is a sedan, and every 300TD is a station wagon. But, these days I go into it with the expectation that people are going to get it wrong.

The last one advertising a TD motor I sent this text.

"Please adjust your ad. This is not a 300TD motor. "T" is for "Touring" which denotes a wagon model. (Wagon models had a different engine head to accommodate the rear suspension pump)

This is an OM617.952 engine from a SD (S class). It was also found in the 300D (E class sedan).

Thank you.
-Someone looking for a wagon engine"

Actually, the OM617.952 is the W123 motor; the OM617.951 is the variation found in W126es. I believe that the wagon may have used the OM617.951 in 1981.

The engine used in the W116 is the OM617.950.

Mines a Euro 300TDT .... and thats by the owners manual. So even more confusing as the first "T" does stand for turbo and second for Touring...
