AHH! pain, Euro light broken, need help!

A rock the size of a pen tip peirced through the glass on my W123 eurolense causing the glass to chip and break on the inside part of the glass cover.

Europa G-wagen, where i bought the lenses, quoted me $94 for that glass peice which is sold separately, but they had no idea if it was a repair i could do myself- considering sealing and everything - or maybe it is a factory job.

performance products quoted me $75. they also don't know anything about the repair.

all of this, the same day i receive my griot's garage lense film to protect them from this very incident. GRR!

has anyone done this or does anyone know a place to get these glass peices that cover the lenses?

also, does anyone know how to make the repair!?

thanks so much

eric

Lense replacement

Peyton,by the look of your photo the answer is yes they can be replaced.Remove the headlight assembly from the car.Now you will see approximately 8 clips around the glass that can be prised off(carefully)these can just be seen on your photo under the bonnet/hood.
As the glass will now be removable check and clean the rubber gasket, making sure you put it back in the same way as it came out.Replace the glass and refix clips, these can be a bit tough to get on but persevere and you will get the hang of it.Then obviously put the lights back in your motor.
Don't worry it's not a hard job, first time I did it I hadn't even had any advice on if it was possible or not.I was just trying to clean condensation marks off the interior of the glass.Bear

Would look real clean if you paint the gray grill insert Satin Black.

Nice touch...

I think I paid $65 for a replacement lens from Capitol West when mine got cracked. Replacement was as simple as removing the unit from the car and popping off the metal clips. The glass then comes right off. Check that the seal is still in good shape, put the new glass in. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Good luck.

I would like to second Capitolwest.
I have just bought a pair of E code Bosch lens from them for an E320, 124 chassis and found them to be excellent to do business with....

2 questions regarding some of the comments made:

1) What would be good to use if the seal behind the glass is no good? Silicone adhesive?

2) What would be the best, longest lasting way to paint the grille black? What would be the best paint? How could I thoroughly clean it before painting it? I have a silver 123 and think a black grille with new chrome strips would look good.

Thanks so much!

Alex

Call me dull ("OK, you're dull", sez the Diesel List) but I like the gray grille. I have experimented with a number of painting expeiments on cars in the past, most recently the taillight surrounds on my old BMW E28 (looked pretty good, but a little "80's"), but I personally think that the gray is a nice accent, especially on your black car. Besides that, regardless of the quality of the prep and paintwork, if you drive your car with any regularlity you will face issues of rock chips and pitting, and because the plastic underneath the paint is gray, I would think those marks would stand out pretty bad. I always see these cars on places like ebay where there was some failed experiment in monochromatic paint schemes and the like which just fall apart after a while (although those are usually in colors like bit-me red), and your car looking so nice and original...

Just my $0.02.
