Smile Get your self a new Haynes W123 Manual

I am going over that nice 617 Turbo that I pulled out of an old very weary SD about 5 years ago. The only thing this engine has going for it, was that before I pulled it summer day in 2010, I jumped it from the battery of my pickup and jumped the screws on the fender to get it to crank. We did hold the fuel shut off or engine stop open so it could get fuel. So I jumped the starter and almost instantly the car was running and it sounded good. It ran for a few minutes and died. I think my helper did not have a good grasp on why he needed to keep that fuel shut off open. Well anyway, it sounded good, the price was right and we pulled it out in about 3 hours and took it home.
Now I am going over that engine to put it in "Buttercup" That 85 engine which is so good but it doesn't like the pilot bearing setup. So I am very hopeful this engine will do the job. So far it is checking out well. Camshaft looks awesome, chain stretch using the timing mark on the camshaft and on the flywheel show 2.5 degrees consistently - and you can really get a good line up on those marks while it is on the engine stand. The iwis chain looks excellent and I have looked at ever link with a magnifying glass. Same with the sprockets. Today I pulled the vacuum pump to see what it looks like and to check the play on the intermediate shaft. Can't find any play by pushing or pulling on the timer. I am not going to pull the head. I would like to, but it does get costly and I keep on telling myself how well it started in the junkyard without glow plugs being used. It can't be to bad. I will at least adjust the valves before I make the final determination on pulling the head.
Well, anyway that is where I am. But my Haynes manual which was used a lot in the past 10 years was really getting ragged. So I did a Gooogle check for a Haynes W123 Manual and found out I could get a brand new one from Haynes Publishing for I think $19.95 including shipping. Order it from their web address if you need one. They don't have all the answers, but we have "STRETCH" and that is a real blessing. But if you need help and like pictures, here is the place to go. Haynes is the information resource for the DIY enthusiast

People criticize Haynes but I have always liked them.

This is the truth. The W123 manual isn't the best but its far better than some of the other manuals for newer cars where they always tell you that whatever you are fixing is too complicated for you and its best to take the car to the dealership.

FSM is available free on-line. Painful, but free.

I have several of the manuals... nearly every car I bought (yeah... I know, I bought too many 123's...) had one in the car...

haynes is useful, but there are far superior foldout schematics. what haynes fits onto one page is about 8 pages of the foldout, which besides being easier to read, is annotated with all kinds of extra information. i paid $29 for one from books4cars.
