"Buy a Mercedes," they said. "It'll be fun," they said.

...and for the most part it has. I have enjoyed these cars. I've been working like crazy here lately on my newly acquired '93 300D 2.5 Turbo. Since May 1st I have replaced the cam sprocket, timing chain, all the chain guides, the tensioner rail, the tensioner, the AC compressor and clutch, the blower motor (even though it had a brand new one already installed but it kept causing the fuse to blow), the klima relay, and a few odds and ends. I have a wastegate actuator (pressure) on the way from atpturbo and I will be ridding myself of the "electronically handicapped" turbo.

I bought an identical parts car last Saturday. That was a smart move. My driver has ASD and it is beginning to "grab" on takeoff and in low speed cornering. The parts car does not have ASD so I plan to swap out the differentials and power steering pump. The parts car has a new set of tires on it (Douglas- Pep Boys maybe?) that the previous owner said had less than 1k miles on them when the engine just stopped running (as if it ran out of fuel).

Eventually I want to have new nozzles installed in the injectors. Gotta find someone to do that for me since a pop tester is not in my tool crib. I still have to install a shifter bushing. I'd rather do engine work than crawl under the car to put that bushing in. If I ever get finished with this one I think I may just keep it. Since my oldest daughter is starting college this Fall I guess I'm gonna HAVE to keep it.

It's gonna happen....you know it is. These aging things need time, money, and sometimes both to get/keep 'em runnin'!

It is fun to own an old Benz. I don't mind spending the money on them.

Have you cleaned out the asd to remedy the grab?

But look at it from positive side.
I have all kinds of MB in the family (meaning I am the one who is fixing them)
The 28 years old MB has wires in perfectly good condition.
The 11 years old seat harness in newer one dropped on the floor under its own weight.
Compare how much "standard" maintenance aka air bags and compressor cost on newer cars.

Did you consider that clogged fuel filters might be the only thing wrong with the new parts car?

At the moment...

I believe the starter has developed an issue and is dragging. The engine will not turn over fast enough to start. The battery is not the issue. Filters are not the issue. I verified that the day I brought it home. The pump is delivering fuel too. I can't get it to spin over fast enough to start. It fires but it won't start. I'm not too concerned that it won't run. Well, at least not at the moment.

John, I hadn't given any thought to cleaning out the ASD system. I kinda like the simpler set up on a non-ASD diff. I will clean it first though. What is the best procedure for flushing that system? If the ASD will function properly then I don't mind leaving it in place. It's grabbing pretty significantly though.

I did manage to get the shifter bushings installed. I HATE that job but I sure enjoy not hearing that shifter rattle.

Will I be gambling by buying new injectors or is my best bet to have mine fitted with new nozzles?

I suggest going with the rebuild with new nozzles. Was one of the first jobs I did when I got mine earlier this year. I'm very pleased by zero smoke under every circumstance except WOT and consistently achieving 33mpg on highway. The waste gate swap is also a massive improvement. I like knowing that there WILL be boost when I want it.

Forum member Greazzer can get you right with the injectors. I've used his service three times now. Highly recommended.

Two cars to keep one going...

First three pics are the parts car. The rest are the daily driver.

Little too nice for a parst car. I'd get that thing running, determine its running and driving condition and possibly keep it, or sell it to put the money towards your daily driver 300D.

ASD: My understanding, from talking with my favorite independent mechanic, is that you cannot disable the ASD without also disabling the ABS system.

The ASD differential requires a special additive to the gear lube for the clutches. Somewhere I have that info (the MB part number), I'll post in a bit. I had to replace the ASD differential in my '95 sedan, the "new" differential was grabbing in turns. After just a few miles of driving with the correct additive in the differential, all that went away.

Hah, it was YOU that I provide this info to before!!!

"Ok, the part number on the bottle:A 000 989 82 03

30ml of oil additive for ASD differential gear lube. "

Please get a bottle and give it a shot, I'll bet it clears your problem right up.

yes...

I bought a bottle at the dealership and topped off the reservoir but it didn't solve the problem. Perhaps a complete flush and all new fluid will solve the problem.

From what I can tell, although I haven't examined it thoroughly, the ASD pumps through the power steering pump and is independent of the ABS. Guess I'll find out after I examine it carefully.
