W201 OM602 Funny noise

Loud and funny noise,

https://youtu.be/9oiIbw-Ypm4

comes and goes on my 87 190D. Seems to be coming from vacuum pump or power steering pump area. Anyone familiar with the cause and remedy?

I think you need to check out the vacuum pump. If you make a simple mechanic's stethoscope from a long screwdriver or a piece of broom stick, put one end on the pump and the other end pressed against your ear, you can locate the source of the noise. You can also use a length of rubber hose in a similar manner.

If your vacuum pump has a crimped on cover, it can fail catastrophically and destroy the engine. If it has a screwed on cover, it is probably the updated version. If the vacuum pump is failing, you should replace it immediately before it also destroys the injection pump timer and the cost of replacing that puppy more than doubles the cost of repair.

Thanks. That's why we have parts cars.

My money is on the belt tensioner. One way to find out is to run the car without the belt for a while from cold, listen to strange noises. Making sure the coolant temperature is within limit. The battery light will be ON but that is OK and don't be alarmed.
