Back From The Track

With the boost controller fixed I went back to the track for the June meet last weekend.

With actual boost we ran a best of 101.1918 (roughly). By some calculators that's about 130 HP (not sure if that's flywheel or wheel). We added boost and slowed down! The conclusion is that more boost was offset by more heat in the intake so there was a slight loss of power.

The solution, of course, is an intercooler - have it on order. It'll be water-to-air and I'll run ice water. Not practical for street use but that's not my situation.

I'll report the results.

Dan

Something is not right...

OM617.95x, right? I'd be suspicious that either you had sufficient boost before, or you have insufficient fuel enrichment (ALDA not working) now.

You should have achieved roughly a 30-40% increase in power, if going from a no-boost condition to a full-boost condition.

I think it is going from a standard boost condition to an added boost condition - but I too have "fueling concerns"

Still an ice cream inter cooler will go down well with the children!

The compressor is upsized and I have 315 injectors - the most I can do 'till I have the money for the Dieselmeken pump, probably this winter. Those who race Diesels ALL run intercoolers and they're not just for decoration. With luck I'll have everything in place so I can run it in July and measure the results.

Going with delta tube and fin or bar and plate?

Tube and fin - sorta. It's water-to-air, the only thing that makes sense in a racing application on a relatively short track. The Alfa-Laval (plate-type) was way out of my price range. Besides, they have some pressure drop and the one I'm getting has almost none.

Here's the one that's on order . The green Rampage (he posts on here sometimes though I can't remember his sign-on) has a slightly smaller version of the same one on a 1500 cc VW Diesel engine and it works great. Should be a good fit for mine.

I look forward to hearing the results... Have you seen my old integrated AWIC?

I never used it. Went through a few different hands before getting mounted ona Gwagen I believe. There would be a fair amount of heat soak due to a lack of cross flow heads, but its also aluminum etc etc.

My 100% stock W210 E300 turbo diesel ran a 17.65 @ 80.08mph as a comparison (if needed), fastest E300 I have seen was running an 11.4 second run @ 121mph

101 in 1/4 mile does sound pretty fast for a 300d.

Drag race results don't translate very well to standing mile Land Speed. It's a different game. But thanks for your inputs!

Ah it wasn't clear what that mileage was. What track was this on?

I only race at the ECTA track in Wilmington, OH. Confusing as I live in Wilmington, NC. - too many Wilmingtons in my life.

That said, I do run occasionally at Coastal Plains Raceway (dragstrip) in Jacksonville, NC but just as a test and tune sort of thing. Mutt is not anything like street legal so Coastal Plains gives me a chance to actually drive the truck under power so essentially a test-n-tune situation.

What was the rpm at 101mph? I ask because I'm wondering if it is geared too tall.
My stock '85 300SD will achieve that speed given enough road.

About 3600. I have some shorter tires and I might install them for July as we're running a 1/2 mile track as an experiment. I expect I'll go thru the lights in 3rd. for the 1/2 mile. And remember, I'm pushing a barn door down the track - even a Mercedes sedan is slippery compared to the brick I'm driving but it fits the class.

Not to rain on your parade but I highly doubt your 300SD will do 100. We see it at the track all the time - "My GPS says I'll go XXX.XX MPH so this is just a formality". Then they get actual speeds with calibrated clocks and it ain't so. Never fails. 100 MPH on a flat level road (the track actually has a slight rise in the middle) is a major accomplishment. While I want to continue to improve I'm actually pretty proud of my little 101.

Dan

Are you recording any data?

There are lots of race systems but something in the $150 range from Onset or Dataq would do the job. The newer Onset stuff has an LCD display so no PC is needed to generally look at data. ( A PC helps with graphing and usually a basic SW package is free. )

Are the tires slipping? Perhaps more boost + more HP = wheel spin. I'd use Abs sensors to record front and rear speeds or at least RPM through the traps and see if that tracks with speed. ( tire growth might be an issue throwing off RPM calcs )
