AC Relay

Quick question - which is the AC compressor relay?

My compressor just stopped coming on. Jumped the low pressure cutoff on the drier and it didn't run. Hot-wired the clutch and it does engage. So maybe a bad relay? My fusebox cover has a nice diagram of the fuses, but nothing about the relays.

Thanks.

There isn't a klima relay on the '84. The compressor control comes from the pushbutton controller. Here is a wiring diagram, and other info, from the FSM:

Thanks. The link didn't work - says "server cannot be found". I'll try it again later.

I've heard of some problems with using Firefox and the FSM. Ensure you are using IExplorer.

Also, I've noticed that it is a bit slow today and they may be having heavy usage. I've noticed my computer has trouble when tracking cookies aren't cleared beforehand.

To avoid this, I've taken to saving many of the frequently used pdf files to my computer.

Look on pg 307 of the manual linked in post #4. On a 300SD, there is a relay in the fuse box, powered via fuse #11 (actuated by push-button box). For those w/ a 300D, the relay is on the driver's inner fender (top, under black plastic cover, also fan relay there 82-84). Relay output is BU wire, 1 mmD.

That goes to the low-pressure switch, BU/GN 1 mmD wire to AC clutch. There is also a small sense wire (BU/GN/RD, 0.75 mmD) going to the TemperatureRegular box (above glove-box in 300D), but that shouldn't disable it. It just lets the box know when the clutch is actuated.

I have wondered why they route the current thru the pressure switch, instead of having it on the logic side (coil) of the relay. It was either simpler wiring or perhaps that "relay logic" would have required still another relay. Anyway, the clutch current is small (<1 A?), so shouldn't damage the pressure switch (unless it shorts to gnd).

Thank you. I haven't been able to see the link; it may not work on my iPad.

Does P307 show which relay in the fusebox? And the relay current flows directly through the low pressure switch on the drier?

Thanks, I will check. Great car, but complex systems.

Try saving the pdf file to a folder on your iPad or PC and then open w/ something that reads a pdf (like Adobe).

Pg 307 shows the relay as "CODE J". You must massage the translations a bit. I have seen similar designators for the vacuum switches in my 300D climate controls. The relay appears to use pins 1, 3, 4, &5 of a connector (?) to the fuse/relay box.

Yes to last question.

Well, I tried to do an attached pdf file but the reply is too large of a file.

Maybe I can explain it enough to help you out.

Clutch power comes from F11 and the closed contacts of the Compressor Relay. (I think it is the rear relay in the fuse box.) The Clutch picks up a ground on the LH fender, behind the headlight.

The Compressor Relay is powered by F10 via the Pushbutton Controller, Evap. Temp. Regulator and the Low Pressure Cut-out Switch. The relay is grounded at G102 behind the Instrument Cluster.

On mine, cleaning the grounds, on both fender wells, cleared up some of the intermittent problems. However, I finally had to resolder the circuit boards inside the pushbutton controller. The joints where the boards connect in an "H" pattern tend to crack with time and flexing.

Hopefully, you can get the link to the diagram to work.
