IP install... locking tool weird, teeth are off the mark.

I put the little locking pin tool into the side of my IP but noticed the teeth are not in line with the timing mark that is right behind the IP's geared input. Also, the locking pin keeps the IP from turning clockwise but not counter clockwise. (The locking pin's little screwdriver slot is horizontal to the ground.)

The teeth should be off (but I don't know if how far off as I don't know if you have the Tool instaled correctly) because the Timing Locking Pin does not lock the Fuel Injection Pump at 24 degrees before top dead center; which is what the IP would be timed to if you were lining the marks up on the front drive and Bearing Cap.

Top Dead Center will be Zero on the Cramk Damper.

When you use the Timing Locking Pin you need to rotate the Engine in the direction of normal Rotation have the Piston coming up on the Compression Stroke and go past 24 degrees before top dead center and continue to OT (top dead center) and go past OT to 15 degrees after top dead center.
It is the same if you use one of the electronic timing methods like RIV or the A&B Light.
(On some models it is 14.5 degrees after top dead center when yo use the timing locking pin or one of the Electronic timing methods.)

This is the tag on My Year and model the minus 15 on the tag means after top dead center. The impulse method mentiond is the Mercedes electronic RIV method of timing.

How could I not have the pin installed correctly? It screws in all the way and the slot is horizontal. ?

This is very confusing to me. Why have the locking tool if it isnt holding the teeth in the correct place? I mean, why make it that way?

It is also tough for me to suggest that.

But, I am not their to see exactly what you are doing.
Also while I have a Timing Locking Pin and have used it I don't remember what the line up marks look like and I don't have a spare Fuel Injection pump that the Tool Fits on to try it and see if mine would look the same.

I had about 2 years of Diesel Mechanic Trade School and earned a living at that for 18 years. And Yes there were times when I made mistakes and I have also see others with more experience than me make mistakes so I never discount that I could have made a mistake; especially when I am learning a new proceedure.

When you are first learning something you can make mistakes and the same if you are rushed or destracted by other stuff in your life or as you said when you don't understand.

Germans think differently they we do.

So in this they have several timing methods that use 24 Degrees before TDC and several timing devices that use that Port on the Governor Housing that 15 degrees after top dead center on the compression Stroke as the spot to time it.

I have attached the real instructions and that may clear it up or may not. Note that instrction #1 does not caution you to make sure you come up on the compression Stroke and then go on to 15 degrees after top dead center. The Mercedes Service Manual was made for trained Mechanics and I guess you are expected to know the details.

On the bottom of the fist page is a pic showing that the timing marks on the front of the Fuel Injection Pump are not lined up when the tool is used. However, the Picture is too dark to show details as to just how many teeth are past the mark when the tool is installed properly

FWIW: I had a fiasco getting my timing set. I ended up making a pin out of a oaken dowel whilst I waited for mine (correct ip lock) to arrive. I was successful (finally!) with 14.5 deg after OT(TDC).

For anyone reading this thread I have the Mercedes Service Manual Book and the Pic is more clear. On a 617.952 Engine when the Timing Locking pin is insalled correctly the Mark on the Bearing Cap lines up with the 4th Tooth as is pictured.

On the Picture that the 300 Super D posted it shows it is lining of with the 2nd Tooth. If his Engine is a 617.952 according to the Mercedes Service Manual the Timing Locking Pin is installe incorrectly.

The thumbnail to the left is the Timing Locking Pin installe correctly (pic from the 617.952 Mercedes Service Manual).

The Pic to the right if this is a 617.952 Engine shows the Pin insalled incorrectly.

I don't have Service Manuals on the other Engines so I don't know if they are the same.

Seriously, there isnt any other way to install it. You screw it in and, that's it. ?? How can I possibly be doing that wrong?

I just want to install my IP and get it timed. Can someone point me to the best way to do this? I really don't get it with the different ways Im being told to set timing, and now of course Im being told that the simple pin tool somehow doesnt work on my IP.

You are right it is the wrong .pdf. As I said I make mistakes.

I am sitting in front of the Library using the free WiFi and don't have access to the .pdfs in the Manual. When I get back I will post the correct one.
