engine block drain cock?

I'm just curious if anyone has ever replaced the engine block coolant bolt with some sort of drain cock, and if so what specifically did you use?

I've been troubleshooting cooling system related problems on my 85 300d and have drained the engine block several times, each time thinking there has to be a better way to drain the engine block.

240 Thats a good idea .As i was changing my coolant pump,i needed to drain off the old coolant , due to the fact that i was unable to get at my engine block screw nut to drain off the old coolant from the block I did a lot of flushes to clean it out . So as you have said ,i think i will get hold of a new drain plug and fit in the centre a tap. But thinking about it the tap must be fitted in the lowest point or most of the coolant will stay in the bottom of the block if it is to high. But you would be able to drain off ,so i might do it after all .

The Forum format won't let me repost pics but if you look in my build thread you'll see how I did mine on a 617 - close enough for you to copy, I think. Basically, I added a nipple in place of the factory plug, then a length of hose routed to a convenient location, and a 1/4 turn ball valve at the end. Much better access than on a 617 where the drain is hidden under the turbo. BTW - I used heat shield on the hose to protect it from the turbo heat though I don't know if exhaust heat would be an issue on the 616.

If you can find the picture - hover over the attachment in the post and it will "come big" on the screen

right click on the picture

Copy URL

In new post click on the little yellow square box showing a picture of a mountain and a sun / moon

Pop up box appears - CTRL + V to paste link in box.

Click OK

It won't let you upload pics that are already uploaded.. but as stretch has pointed out... you can repost the image as many times as you like. Just link to the image.

I put block drain valves on everything I have. Get the type where the valve dies not come apart. ( not the type that operated like a brake bleeder.)

Get about an inch and a half of 1/4" tubing / brake line , press it into the end of the valve but not so far as to block the port. ( open the valve and you will see the cross drilling)

You can then slip on a piece of hose when it comes time to drain into a pan rather all over the floor.
