w116 300sd-Instrument Cluster
Just removed the Instrument cluster from my 1979 300sd (w116).
Does anyone know an easier way to remove the speedometer cable. Jeezus, not easy. I removed the speaker cover and speaker on the dash (left side) and was hoping that this would give me better access to the back of the cluster. You do have access but its hard to spin or remove the nuts being that they are tight. I ended up using a 10 mm to loosen one of the lines(oil pressure line) and then removed it using my hand thru the speaker opening. Pushing in the left side of the instrument cluster allowed the right side to come out and I was able to squeeze my hands to remove the speedometer holding nut. Was careful not to scratch the wood located directly under but I came close to scratching it a few times. I might have to see if the speedometer cable can be stretched out more. Will be taking my instrument cluster to North Hollywood Speedometers to get it repaired and calibrated. If there is a better way, please advise |

Yes, reach up from under the drivers side and push the cluster towards the steering wheel. They pop out quite easily. If the cable is reeeally tight, gently use a pair of pliers with the jaws taped to get it started.
Think... you are moving your hand towards the steering wheel from behind the instrument cluster.
