w116 Fuel Tank Door Grommets

Own a 1979 300sd and I'm trying to insert the grommets that cushion the fuel tank door.

I had previously installed the same style grommets on my other 1979 300sd but don't remember the size of the driver that I used. I know for a fact that I used a straight allen bit.

I lubed the grommet and still ended up tearing it.

Got a feeling that I am using the wrong size.
You would think that the grommet end would need to be stretched enough to where it would narrow the width so that the groove on the grommet would settle on the opening.

Looking back I believe I might have used a more narrow driver..

Pointy ends are now broken off but I'm not giving up

Any tips greatly appreciated

No need to use a pointed driver of any sort..

Lube the grommet and use your thumbs to push in hard...

It worked

Try some silicone spray. I use it on other rubber parts and they usually slip right in.
