I'll add another +1 to avoiding Supertech.

Around 180k miles the head gasket on my MR2 let go. Common problem around that time. When I replaced it I had the head and valve cover and all that cleaned up sparkly. Ran it the next 30k miles on Supertech oil, then the valve cover gasket started leaking. Yanked the valve cover, and the valve cover was covered in gunk on the inside. It had been clean 30k miles before that.

Now I run name brand dino 15w-40 HDEO in it. Mobil Delvac 1300, Delo 400, Rotella, etc. A plus is that I can run it in my diesel if I need.

I have used supertech 15-40 in my 82 Datsun Diesel for a looooong time w/o any gunk build up. I also used in in the 240D for 16K miles w/o any problems. then went to a syn oil for the past 56K miles.

I also use it the f250 6.9 Diesel.

The oil is made by one of the major oil Co`s.

I mean yeah its cheaper but Delo or Rotella are $12/gal at Walmart so you're saving 20% vs a real oil. Worth it? I'm not so sure.

Walmart's is Delo400 LE , not the same as Delo400

(old comparison) http://www.turbodieselregister.com/TDR57_Oil.pdf
Maybe supertech got worse since then

I got some Napa Fleet 15w40 on sale for $10 and bought several

For the record, my gunk experience with Supertech was with 20w50 gasser oil. Looking like that's not a valid comparison to the quality of their diesel oil.

Amazing article! Saving that one and passing it around to a couple friends. Thank you for sharing!

I bought a jug of Supertech 15w40 universal oil for the first run in the new engine, in case it's a leaker. Won't be installing the new engine, and now I won't have any qualms about using that oil in the existing engine or in anything else I need.

FWIW Rural King (a farm store chain in the midwest) has house brand 15W40 diesel oil at $6.99/gal, $12.99/2gal jugs, Rotella usually $12/gal, Delo about $50/5gal minus $25 rebate. (all dino juice)

I might have done better. I found Kendall fully synthetic 5W-30 oil at the 99c Only Store this week for $2.50/qt (not everything is really 99c). Even has titanium something additive (hokey?). Not using in my diesels since they need regular changes to get rid of carbon, but fine for my other engines. The Toyota gunking experience (post 4) might not be attributable to the oil. There was a big lawsuit over that. I think something about the head drains clogging, while Toyota claimed "user error". Still, a high detergent "diesel" oil would surely help.
