W123 Carrier Bearing Replacement

My mechanic says my carrier bearing is shot.
What all parts do I need for this job?
Any other repairs I should consider/look at while he's in there?
Please let me know.
Thanks in advance.
Jay

I'd check the flex joints - if any cracks or signs of aging at all have new ones on hand since they are going to come out anyway. (Pay careful attention to orientation of the nuts and bolts and where the washers go). Also the tranny mount and probably motor mounts too.

As for the center bearing, I've read several posts saying that only the carrier needs to be replaced and suggesting that removing and replacing the bearing itself was not worth the hassle. I'm getting ready to do this job and I think I'll wait 'till the driveshaft is out to decide whether to replace the bearing. There are also gude bushings for the driveshaft ends.

Don't overlook the little trick of rolling the car back and forth with the spline nut loose, before you finally tighten it back up - that really does make a difference. Also don't forget to mark the driveshaft parts so you can put it back with the same orientation it had originally.

There is a problem finding a good quality rubber Part that holds the Bearing.

You will get a better idea what parts you might need by reading about the job in the Repair Links

See post #4 for a pic of the Bearing that is on the end of each drive shaft. If nothing else you need to put a little grease in it. In the pic the Bearing is circled.

Is there another name for a carrier bearing?
Do they call it something different on my benz?

Driveshaft center support.

It's more likely that the rubber support for the bearing is bad than the bearing itself, but it makes good sense to replace both...they're cheap enough and it's kind of a pain getting in there to replace them. You should replace the boot as well.

I was able to loosen the big nut on the driveshaft with large channel lock pliers, transmission in gear.

Do not let the driveshaft separate until the 2 pieces are clearly and accurately marked.
