Oil cooler/lines - which size thread?

Hi all,

I am looking to fit an aftermarket oil cooler as my car has had both oil coolers disabled and the pipes have been simply looped together.

I am still on a quest to get the original oil coolers out to be able to fit new ones in a side mounted location - hopefully I figure out how to soon!

Anyway, I will probably need to get some AN adaptors to run the new coolers, the OEM lines are actually in good condition, however I am tempted to change everything from where they outlet just below the oil filter.

Am I correct that they are an M22x1.5 thread? Are they the same thread on both ends of the hose or just on the end that connects to the oil cooler? Eg if I do decide to run new line (probably AN8 or AN10) from the oil filter end are they also the same size?

Thanks in advance - gradually working on all of the previous owner's bodges!

Why not use the original fittings/hard lines and just cut them at an appropriate length and braze on -10 AN fittings. On mine I kept the entire length of hard line, but you could just keep an inch if you wanted.

I am thinking about removing the stock lines and sort out the routing of the lines different to stock as I might look to fit a larger intercooler/change the inlet manifold on that side.

I would rather not braze onto a stock fitting but I will still look into it as an option - I guess it would depend on how universal the stock fittings are.

That might be the correct size on a W123 but you need to check on other models.

Do you know if the fittings are usually the same on both ends? I can easily get to the oil cooler threads as there isn't anything attached to them at the moment!

Hey m1tch we're are you located? FWIW, I had a guy in Cincinnati fabricate new lines and fittings at a cost of $125. It worked out great. My fittings were seized, are yours? Also, where did you find an aftermarket cooler? I only found OEM.

I am over in the UK, its why I am lucky enough to have an OM606 turbodiesel in a wagon body as standard

I will think through some options, I might just simply add on some AN fittings onto the stock lines at the end for a different oil cooler.

I am just going to swap it out for a universal oil cooler - probably a Mocal, which will be thermostatically controlled, will either mount it in the OEM location or simply ditch the useless front aux fans and fit it there.

The main issue I have with the stock lines at the moment is that they are looped together and are rather in the way of everything on the inlet manifold side - its why I am thinking of just getting new lines straight from the oil outlet near the oil filter and then run a better route.

I need a bit of a hand regarding the oil cooler setup, when I type in a W210 oil cooler it sometimes comes up with an oil cooler to one side as well as a longer thinner oil cooler at the front - I don't think I have the front mounted version so I am guessing this is on the E55 version?

I am still unsure as to how to remove the stock oil cooler from the location - is the bracket held in with 2 bolts or do I need to take more of the car apart to be able to remove the stock one?

Also, when I do type in 'w210 oil cooler' I seem to keep getting the bit that attaches to the oil filter area rather than the oil cooler radiator part - is the radiator part required at all or is most of the cooling done by the part attached to the oil filter on the engine?

Thanks in advance, I guess I need to get the car back up on the stands to see how its set up.

I believe this is the setup I have:

Hi all,

Just working on this, I have got myself an M22 to AN10 fitment - both sides are male, the issue being is that I cannot find an M22 coupler to fit between the male M22 fitment on the oil line and the M22 male end on the adaptor to the AN10 fitment for the lines.

I can see that I have just 1 hard line on the stock oil cooler with the correct fitments on each end (its now its looped at the moment). Should I simple use this line and add another M22 flared nut onto the end?

I also need to check that the oil cooler lines are defiantly M22x1.5 - need someone to confirm this as there seems to be NO female fitments for this thread, most only go up to M20 or start at M24.

The other thought I had was to try and find an M22 stud connector and use that and simply screw the oil cooler line at one end and the AN10 adaptor at the other - these also seem very hard to find!

Still not got the aftermarket cooler fitted, I do however have an M22 female/female coupler so I should now be able to fit this to the OEM lines and then to the AN10 adaptor to then connect to the aftermarket oil cooler.

Hopefully this will work and not leak, I am quite tempted to see if I can use a compression fitting to AN10 but might initially try the M22 coupler - just worried about leaks etc!

I can tell you that my 1998 U.S. Spec E300 sedan is set up like the EPC view.

The intercooler runs down low in front below the radiator.

Hmm it looks like the connector between the hard line that has looped the rubber lines are seized on and won't budge. I am guessing that I could however simply cut the hardpipe and attach fittings onto those (and convert to AN10). Not 100% sure if I really need to have an oil cooler on the car but its something that I do want to get fitted at some point!
