617 Starter Wiring ??
I screwed up. I took the wires off the starter on the '84 300SD and did not mark them.
Two of the four are obvious, the ground strap and the smallest wire. The other two larger wires come out of a cable sleeve, they mount on the two large threaded studs on the starter. The two studs are side by side. What is the best way to be sure I get the wires attached right the first time, instead of guessing and taking the 50% chance of getting them on the wrong studs?

OK, I found this post by Diesel911 from Oct 2012: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/328163-81-300sd-starter-wiring.html
If nothing changed with the starter wiring between '81 and '84, then both large cables attach to the long stud on the starter.

Yep! At least, that's how I did my '85 a few months ago.

The small can on top of the big can is the solenoid. It does 2 things, it closes a power contact to allow current into the motor (the big can), and it drives the pinion gear from the output shaft of the motor onto the ring gear, to turn over the engine.
On that solenoid are 3 terminals. The upper big terminal is the main supply from the battery and accepts the two cables. One big cable comes straight from the battery and the other feeds on to everything else. The lower big terminal is the output of the switch and feeds via a strap into the main motor terminal. Nothing else should connect here. The small terminal takes the small wire (usually purple on a MB), this is the trigger signal from the key for the solenoid coil.
