Om617 timing question
Hello,
I have recently swapped an om617 in my 91 toyota pickup. The engine is out of an 85 300d. Has roughly 180k on it. Before installing it, i checked and adjusted the valves to spec, removed alda, egr and rack limiter. I also checked for timing chain stretch. My results showed about 2-3 degrees tops so I left it as is. Now my real question is, where should i set the timing. When the engine was out i rotated the engine to 27BTC and used the drip method to get it spot on. My concern is that im only at 24-25 BTC because of my timing chain. In theory, does this mean i need to set crank position to 29-30 btc to achieve roughly 27? It runs really well just seems like it is down on power. Blows a little black smoke and some white at idle. I have the wastegate adjusted all the way out and using a subaru wrx intercooler and only seeing about 12-13 psi. Thanks in advance, Jordan. |

Even with the Timing Chain Stretch what ever you read on the Crank Damper when you check or do the Fuel Injection Pump timing is what the Fuel Injection Pump timing is.
Meaning if the Fuel Injection Pump timing was adjusted after the Timing Chain stretch as far as the Fuel Injection Pump timing goes the stretch has been compensated for.

Ditto on the fuel timing. It is 27 deg BTDC, since you measured that. If you want to correct the valve timing, you can get a 2 deg offset key for the cam that corrects 4 deg at the crank. That would give you allowance for future chain wear. Advancing valve timing helps on the low rpm end (what you probably want for crawling), while delaying it gives more power at high rpm.
I wouldn't want to run at 13 psig intake pressure, since that is pushing the "pistons melt" limit. But, if you plan to operate mostly at high altitude that would be safe.

12-13psi is spot on for stock fueling. I ran 18psi(when spraying methanol) with no ill effects.
You can advance the timing by drip or by ear. Advance, test drive, and when it knocks you've gone too far-just retard a bit after that.

Fuel timing would not cause the smoking issue until the timing is way off, I think your next step should be testing/adjusting the fuel injectors. Forum member Greazzer can do that, he does excellent work and his prices are very competitive. A Bosch service shop local to you should also be able to do this. Better independent MB shops may also have the equipment and expertise. You could also get your own test rig (or build your own) and DIY.

Welcome to the forum. If your injectors do turn out to be suspect, I second the recommendation to send them to Greazzer.
