I need a bigger Dropbox

I am selling all my Mercedes stuff and some other projects also...
Having several parts cars and having inherited RLeo's parts cars I have a lot of stuff and need a bigger storage for sharing the pictures.

If you do not already have Dropbox ( at Dropboxdotcom) and would be willing to sign up for the FREE service.... and list me as who sent you I get more space for my pictures.
I researched drop boxes before I signed up with this one... it is one of the most recommended....

I don't remember what it asks for reference...
but my screen name at Yahoo is probably what is needed...

If someone knows the procedure better than I do please explain it for me.
I have only asked one person to do this and they are pleased with how easy it is to use for sharing.... many photographers use it to send large files to people.
It may be that I need to send you an ' invite' but I do not remember.

The reason I am getting rid of my projects is that I just found out my year long sore leg problem is not just a torn ligament like I thought... but deterioration of L4 and L5 in my lower back....MRI to follow..... not a big deal... but it is not reasonable for me to think I can do the crawling around and bending over which I used to do. This was probably caused by 5000 hours on the Ford Diesel tractor on gopher infested land...and using a 6 foot pry bar to attach contrary implements...

My 1980 240d Manual Shift , manual windows, no sunroof, Type ONE AC system not working.
all my paper manuals ....at least 7 , spare 240 engine, spare NA 5 cylinder engine, I think 5 parts cars....
7 cans of R12,

and I will start getting the particulars on the rest of the stuff...
but this is August in the Middle of Texas....
Thanks very much if you can help me out on the Dropbox capacity....
Greg

Hope you're not too uncomfortable. Getting old sucks in many ways.

I just opened a Dropbox account a few days ago, so it's too late for me to do that. If nobody else steps up, you could always sign up with Google. They offer 15GB of cloud storage for free. https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2424384?hl=en

You got to be tough to get old L.
I'm slowly starting to come to this realization.
What kind of neat tools you got to sell?

Can't help you with Dropbox as I've had an account for some time. But I can commiserate with you on your back issues since I've just recently been diagnosed with similar problems in my L4 and L5 discs.

My left leg hurts like nothing I've ever experienced but happily a good nerve drug has taken the edge off just a bit. I'm waiting to get scheduled for an epidural steroid injection that will hopefully allow me to continue with PT to strengthen those core muscles. Man, I never thought I would get old this young

Wishing you good luck in your recovery Greg.

Regards

Thanks for all the suggestions..... and nice to know Dropbox is known to people already... I have not used it much but the person who did sign up was excited about how easy it was to share large numbers of photographs with people.. sure beats loading photos piece meal onto emails and shipping...

At this point in time I feel the R12 should go with the 240... as that is the only thing not working on it...

Joe, it also my left leg.... my ex dentist developed a limp and his PCP and a second opinion both missed its cause as being a brain tumor... which was removed with no problem... so these things are often relative and could be worse... incidentally my 89 year old mother just last fall had L4 and L5 fused by a great surgeon here in Austin.. then had her right knee replace...and all healed just fine... so I view L4 and L5 problems as better than a brain tumor.. which might not turn out to be benign like the Dr's....

I realized after I got a private message that ' Central Texas ' was not enough information as to location.... I am near Elgin, Tx just east of Austin, TX...

Another option would be a site like Flickr or SmugMug. I've got a Flickr account. It's free for a basic account, with enough storage for a lot of images (1 TB). You can create albums for different categories of parts and send people links to those albums. You can send links to individual images too. I believe you can allow people to download the files, if that's necessary.

As for Dropbox I use it often to share files. Once a file or folder full of files is uploaded you click on the "share" button that appears to the right of that item in the list on the Dropbox site. It'll ask for an email address to send an invite to, or you can simply copy the URL shown and then paste it into emails to other folks yourself (I like this better FWIW).

Dropbox was highly recommended by several pro photographers and I think CNet is one of the computer sites where I checked reviews.

Photobucket is hideously littered with advertising, so much that it locks up with ad block (they must have some odd script somewhere) . I would not recommend it.

Sites like Flickr, Photobucket, etc. are places people use to view image files primarily. When you post to Flickr etc. your images can be seen by anyone, unless you limit visibility. Users "follow" each other, join groups that focus on particular interests, share ideas, etc. These sites are communities of people who like to share and talk about photos and all the various things associated with making them. I use Flickr for sharing images without allowing people to download actual copies of the files.

Dropbox is a file sharing system individuals and groups use to share files in a more direct and private way. It is for sharing all kinds of files, not just images. When you post something up to Dropbox it is not hanging out in "public". The only people who will access the files you upload are the ones you "invite" to do so. So Dropbox is a site where you place actual files for download onto other computers, and not so much a viewing platform. It's more of a place you use for work-related stuff, when you need to put copies of files in a place only a few people will access, sorta like an external network drive.

Gmog220d, Thank you for that excellent comparison. Most of that I did not know. I chose Dropbox based on recommendations and looks like I got good info....

You're welcome!

If a higher degree of privacy and the ability to control who has access is important to you then I'd say Dropbox is a better choice. One trade off is more limited storage space. You can get around that by making sure the files you share there are not larger and more detailed than they have to be for good display on computer monitors (assuming we're talking about image files).

If having stuff hanging out in public isn't a problem then I'd use one of the photo sharing sites and be worry free on storage space issues (to a point). As for ads I must say Flickr is ad-free (I am running Adblocker, not sure that makes the difference). It's a well-designed site that's easy to use.
