om603 3.5 3.0 swap 350sdl transmission question

Im swapping the driveline from a wrecked 1987 300td into a 1991 350sdl. The transmission on the 300 td is 722.317 with a cable speedo and the 350 sdl has a 722.361 with electronic speedo sensor. How different are the transmissions? Is it possible to just swap the tail housing? I would almost prefer to just swap the whole transmission since I wouldn't have to wait for a new gasket and output shaft seal. I am worried about the 3.5 trans not shifting properly with the higher revving lower tq 3.0 motor. Both transmissions are in good condition, the 350sdl had a rebuild trans installed 20,000 ago by the PO and the 300td trans has been gone through thoroughly (b2, seals, shift kit). What should I do to have a functional speedo in the 350sdl?

Don't know if this helps, but I have an 1987 300D that I changed the tail housing out with one from a SDL. My 300D tail housing was broken in an accident, and the SDL tail housing was the only one I could find at the time. It bolted on easily enough, only to find that the SDL had the electronic pick-up so I had to find another tail housing for the 300D to have the speedometer work. Wish I had encountered you earlier, I would have happily traded the SDL tail housing for the other....

Keep the .361 with the car; very small differences in shift characteristics.
Should you so desire, the valve body could be changed in the future.

Hey what color interior is that donor wagon? I have a blue interior on my 87 and I could use some trim bits off it before you junk the body if they are decent.

Oh OH OH! I need some hardware from the rear gate! Specifically all of the inside door latch release mechanism. See attached pic, red circles. Bonus would be the lock cylinder with a key that works in it, green circle. Hopefully it is really a TD and not just a turbo diesel...

In your first post is this statement:

If the difference in engine speed at the shift points was on the order of 1000RPM, you would be correct to be concerned. However, a difference of 100-150RPM between the 300 and the 350, is functionally insignificant. Those who design the valve bodies, I am told, also weigh, to within 2 grams, the amount of jam that they apply to their morning toast.

Adjustments of throttle pressure (Bowden cable), and modulator pressure will settle all changes.
