OM602 Fuel Leak - Help Needed

In addition to an oil leak I'm tracking a fuel leak and need some advice on solving it.

Below are two photos of the leak (click for full size images). Going with the fact "water flows downhill" it looks like the fuel leak is coming from the area in the first picture with a multi-colored box around it.

What is this threaded part? Can I just tighten the ring?

Being impatient I popped out to the garage and tightened the ring in photo 1. Hopefully this will fix the leak. But I am still curious what this connector is.....

Degrease it with Brake Cleaner or something like purple power. Take if for a drive and see if you can pin point where the leakd is coming from.

I don't own a newer Mercedes so looking at the pic is not as helpful for me.

I just looked at a bunch of stuff.

I'll take a stab at it: control rod sensor?

... Did I kill it?

Electronic idle control thing it seems like to me.
Mine has been unplugged since I've had it, but doesn't leak

I just had a look at mine and I also have a tiny bit of oil around it. The idle control is at the rear so I'm thinking that is the inductive pickup sensing rack position.

Sad to report that I'm still tapping that ring clockwise to stop the leak. It seams that after each long run either (A) it's comes loose or (B) something is else is happening that allows me to tighten it more.

Regardless I just hope it gets tight soon and stops leaking fuel.

That is definitely the rod travel sensor. I think you may have to take it to a Bosch shop to have the sensor replaced. I had a quick look at the FSM and the only procedure in there was to validate the function, at the end it says if it does not pass the test the pump must be put on a calibration stand to replace the sensor.

I'm not certain if that sensor is even required if the EGR has been deleted?

EGR is gone many miles ago. The car has and continues to run great. I'm worried about safety and my mileage with the leak.

Thanks for the pointers, off to the garage!

There are three things the engine management looks at in the 90+ 602 engines.
- wastegate control - overboost protection
- emissions - EGR as well as fueling management for smoke control
- idle regulation

You need that rack sensor, even if you deleted the EGR, for the other control functions to work properly. Your fuel economy will be negatively affected if the sensor is not working properly since the control can't regulate the rack without the sensor.

Of course it's a safety issue with it leaking like that so you'll need to get it fixed. You may end up better off with a replacement pump.

Idle regulation is simply rpm sensor, engine temperature and ip idle speed control through the engine management system.

MAF, rack sensor, fresh air, exhaust recirculation are part of the EGR control circuit. If EGR has been deleted rack sensor is no longer doing anything as the controllers have been deleted.

Waste gate would need to be a pressure controller the engine management system would only control fast and slow idle.

Check out this link to reseal the sensor

I checked after arriving in Montreal and everything seemed dry - yeah!
After getting home it's wet again - sigh!

Time to visit my local MB independent for some advice.

Incorrectly I thought this leak was caused by the ALDA.

Since tapping the lock ring almost a complete turn it has slowed down, but is still leaking. Time to visit my local MB Diesel mechanic....
