Wife said "it's raining" 84SD

Unfortunately she meant on her head and the sun roof was closed. What's the repair? RTV is absolutely ruled out because I like the sun roof.

Are there any inexpensive parts available?

I'm thinking one of these in the glove compartment should do the trick -

Probably just the drain tubes are stopped up. They exit down the rear roof pillar and out behind the rear tire. I had one on my 81 SD that was crushed during an accident, should have replaced it when I had the rear quarter panel off, but had to blow it out occasionally.

I blew the drains out a year or so because they stopped up, filled the headliner with water causing me to remove the headliner. It still hasn't been reinstalled. That would be an easy fix but brings up a question of "why again so soon."

Could be anything clogging them from pine needle to a spider that made one of the drain tubes it's home. Give them a clean.

Have you been parking under trees/bushes when the roof has been open?

JimmyL had a good thread using a pipe snake, I`ll see if I can find it.

Found it:

Not sure where you are located, bit in the south we have " mud dauber wasps" that seal any hole that they can find. I have had a/c drain tubes and any bolt hole in the engine compartment plugged on my truck this summer.

If the rubber sunroof drain hoses have dried out, they can crack at any of the four sunroof drain pan nipples and cause water to drain into the headliner. The hoses are routed though the A-pillar channels and also the C-pillar channels.

If instead, you have a one or more plugged drains, the backlog can flow over the drain pan lip and thus drain into the headliner.

If you have open drains, but a cracked or poorly fitting sunroof drain hose, most of the water flow will drain out normally if its not raining too much. If there is a little too much water flow you will spring a leak from the hose.

Sort of like a loose radiator hose that doesn't leak with a low pressure cap, but leaks profusely with a higher pressure cap.

I have this problem with my 1978 300SD. I don't have any leaks the first few days of the rainy season. My sunroof drain pan has visible rust. It is balky and doesn't open or close smoothly and I am sure one or more of the rubber sunroof drain hoses has dried out and cracked or slipped off a fitting.

Today was half off for ToolKit members at the North San Jose Pick-n-Pull. I pulled a sunroof assembly of a 1978 W116 (450 gasser). I'll have the pan powder coated and switch out my original pan, hopefully before the next rainy season starts again. I'd like to do a pictorial of the process and post it on the forum. The photo shows how I transported the sunroof home in the trunk of my 1983 300SD.

If you can, I would inspect your drain hoses for cracks or loose fit. If that is your problem, no need to immediately replace the hose(s). A simple quick fix is to use large marine grade heat shrink tube (that has heat activated adhesive on its interior) to seal the hose to the nipple.

By the way, the front drain hoses on my purchase were intact, tight fitting, but the hoses were hard and cracked instead of slipping off the fitting. The rear hoses were already cracked on the top. There were some water stains on the headliner as well.

Good luck in fixing the interior rainstorm.

Park on clean cement or asphalt, open the sunroof all the way, then pour water in the tracks. Make sure water comes out onto the ground. If it doesn't, you'll know which tube is clogged or disconnected or if the pan has a hole rusted through. 123s have four drain tubes, one in each corner. I assume 126s do too.
