New to me project 300SDL (straight pipe content inside)

*Purists look away NOW!* I scooped up my friends '87 300SDL. He smashed a deer a with the car years ago, replaced the damaged sheet metal, lost interest and let the car sit idle for 8 years in a barn. It's got 160K, #16 head, H&R springs and a totally obnoxious 3" straight exhaust. Whoever built the exhaust system actually did a beautiful job. It's properly flanged to the factory down pipe, retains the factory style hangars and the welds are spectacular! I think it's a 1st generation Denali/Escalade tip. He claims to have paid close to $1,000 for the exhaust and I'm inclined to believe it. So the plan for this one is try and source correct "Impala Brown" body work so I can avoid a respray. The paint has the typical clear checking, so paint matching the "patina" would be next to impossible. I pulled the seats and carpet for a deep clean and they came out very nice. It even has the factory MB black rubber winter mats. Next on the list is to cut that stupid exhaust tip off and perhaps add a resonator. The car sits way too low for my tastes, so I'll probably be swapping the lowering springs for factory equipment.

The video wouldn't play for me. I agree it's a bit too low. How much did you pay?

The video link needs "watch" in the address, not "edit":

If you plan to take any distance trips, the drone of the straight-pipe exhaust will wear on you.

He probably had to go with the oval-shaped tip because a 3" exhaust would have been frequently dragging with the car that low.

I wouldn't surprised if a good paint shop couldn't doctor the standard paint to account for slight fade. It's a beautiful car. I wish my interior was half that nice.

Worse than that... it can cause permanent ear damage... Ringing in the ears the rest of your life.... take it from ME you do not want that.

Look at a chart of decibels of noise and length of time they can cause permanent damage... you may be surprised at how short... or how low, if a longer period of exposure... can cause it....

Looks like a good project.

The straight pipe exhaust isn't too bad when cruising. Mine's 2.25" straight piped and I don't hear it at freeway speeds. At idle it's OK, with throttle it gets really loud in a hurry, pretty obnoxious around town and the noise level does not at all match the HP level.

Check the EPC for the spring part numbers. You may find charts with the rates and wire diameter and length and maybe either find a compatible spring, or perhaps realize other models share the same springs.

As for the exhaust, I'm sure the neighbors and wife are going to love that! :-)

My 300D came with 2.5" or 2.75" exhaust (cant remember) with a single straight through magnafliw muffler at the back. Basically sounds like that, maybe a little quieter (hard to tell from a video) but it doesn't drone at all on the freeway. All I did was replace the fugly dual chrome exhaust with a simple turn down which helps keep the back of the car clean.
