OK, we get that your concerns are low on the choice of solvents. gasoline is a solvent, and it does work, and it is low cost... as long as you do not catch fire...
as you have pointed out... even filling up at the station is risky with gasoline. heat, vaporization, static discharge, and many other issues can easily ignight the fuel, and many insurance regulations SPECIFICALLY refuse to acknowledge a claim if gasoline is responsible for the fire...

It is all your fault ....and we did not even get around to discussing CARB cleaner.. with Toluene breathing warnings with Skull and Crossed Bones on the side of the can.... but it really works.... possibly for injectors also....

Carb cleaner with tolulene is my go-to AR-15 cleaner. (Only because they don't sell gasoline in aerosol cans with that handy straw)

Post Back On Topic

....I was pretty sure I'd bought some of this stuff Rich mentions but looking only revealed " tire and wheel cleaner " from the Dollar King , I'd noticed it smelled the same as this brand's " Upholstery Cleaner " and one other cleaner so I figured what the hey , I wanted to clean my Bunts anyways , after they were clean I used this wheel cleaner on the underhood paint that's grimy beyond belief , it worked out very well indeed ! I can't post the before and after pix on this crappy at&t connection but I will soon .

I even took the black WSW fluid bottle into my kitchen sink and used the wheel cleaner there , all this different cleaning with the same generic 4" wide soft paint brush .

THANX Rich for this thread ! the next time I'm shopping I'll look for the *exact* brand you suggested as I bet it's even better .

Before and after

I took my 240 to the car wash to clean the engine. Here are some before and after photos.

Looks great.
I can't get over how un-cluttered your engine bay is vs my late model 300D.

It is a bare bones 240 with cloth seats and manual everything. Also, NO A/C (not equipped from the factory).

Is that a cruise control actuator on the driver's side fender?

Question Degreasing

Rich ;

Did you need to use a brush on the 240 or just soak it and wash off with the garden hose ? .

I always soak my engine in the "Engine Brite " stuff awhile then work it all around with a variety of different soft paint brushes , works very well but not as well as this product on the paint .

I'm still working my way through several cases of Engine Brite but am keen to try this stuff as I have dirty , ugly paint under the hood .

I just spray it on before the drive to the coin-op car wash, and then another dose before pressure washing it. No hand work necessary. I may do some detail work with a brush the next time, but it is good for now.
