Oil leak near clutch on 1982 240D
 

I just replaced my oil pan, new gasket, nice, no more oil pan leak.

After doing so I noticed I've also got a leak near the clutch - there are 2 nuts about a foot away from each other that are becoming coated in oil and drip...drip...

Checking the topside, I have a minor valve cover leak. But, tracing the oil down , I don't see any other wet areas between the valve cover and the area that is leaking.

OK, so I have one oil leak down, now I need to fix this other leak.

I'm slightly concerned it might be the rear main seal. If that's the case, I'll have to use my spare engine after all.

Any ideas, comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Huh. I just noticed my intake manifold bolts had backed out, tightened them up... it was vibrating like mad. Is it possible I could just need to replace the intake manifold / gasket? I'm assuming that would cause an oil leak... appears to have slowed after tightening the bolts

On the five cylinder at the back of the block there is a ball bearing used to seal the oil channel which I think supplies the oil squirters....
If you car has that same plug it is in a place which would look like a rear seal leaking..
I know your car does not have the squirters.. but it may have the same channel...
Of course if that is what is leaking I do not think it will make any difference compared to the rear seal needing replacement as I think the trans would need to be dropped to get to either of them.... or pull the engine....

I may just pull the engine. It would be easier than chasing the leak with it in the car. The only part I am not looking forward to is retiming the IP. My luck it'll be something really stupid, so I'm going to replace the valve cover gasket again, this time I'll clean the mating surface...

In an 82 240 you should be able to trace the source of the leak with the engine in the car. I'd spray the engine down with brake cleaner until it is clean then look for the source of the leak.

If you do pull the motor no reason to remove the injection pump that I can see.

What are your thoughts on this? I'd really appreciate you having a look at this for me. It is coming from where the transmission and engine mate, forward of the flywheel.
