1980 240d Cruise control repair

I'm looking for some kind of diagram of the resistors in the cruise control amp, I have the 10pin tyoe and i found one burnt resistor but i cant make out any of the numbers on it to hopefully buy a replacement at radio shack and install it. The vacumm actuator works just fine but nothing happens when i try to engauge the cruise control im gussing this resistor is the problem. I cant upload a pic right now but it is gray in color and veticial and to the left of the middle of the board. I hope someone on here has enough expericance to maybe tell me what resistor to buy

If it is solid gray that would do no good anyway..
from one of those urls..

' The physical size of a resistor is indicative of the power it can dissipate, not of its resistance."

Resistor Power Rating and the Power of Resistors

exactly what is written on it..
are there any dots on it ?

There are only a few normal sizes ..which relate to the power it can deal with..
just find one which matches what is written on it...and at least the same size.. but bigger will not hurt..

'As the dissipated resistor power rating is linked to their physical size, a 1/4 (0.250)W resistor is physically smaller than a 1W resistor, and resistors that are of the same ohmic value are also available in different power or wattage ratings. Carbon resistors, for example, are commonly made in wattage ratings of 1/8 (0.125)W, 1/4 (0.250)W, 1/2 (0.5)W, 1W, and 2 Watts.

Generally speaking the larger their physical size the higher its wattage rating. However, it is always better to select a particular size resistor that is capable of dissipating two or more times the calculated power. When resistors with higher wattage ratings are required, wirewound resistors are generally used to dissipate the excessive heat."""

Here is a link with great photos and diagrams:

Understanding the VDO Cruise Control Amp - Pelican Parts Technical BBS

(Yes, I know it says Porsche but the cruise amp in the thread is for an MB. Evidently, they are very similar.)

I found out it is a 2ohm 5% 3watt resistor, I'm gonna have to order it since radio shack doesn't carry anything close to that, unless it would work with a different resistor

This is a lower end power resistor. Two 3.9 ohm two watt carbon resistors used in parallel are pretty easy to source and should replace it. Or two I ohm 2 watt carbon resistors in series.

Although once you are certain of the fact that it is burnt out and the value positive. Open it up to make sure it is not a wire wound resistor. They seemingly can deal with more heat than carbon resistors. The reason the case color is gray is that it is probably ceramic as are the majority of wire wound resistors.

Also because the resistors value is stated in the fashion it is I suspect it is a wire wound resistor. Usually a resistor burns out for a reason but just age and cycling can do it as well.

These older cruise controls usually benefit from having some of the capacitors replaced as well. I have always had a real bias against European electronics and their components. That is from a servicing perspective. I expect you will have to order a three or five watt 2 ohm resistor from an electronic component supply house if it is wire wound.
