IDK Paris had gotten worse than Beijing. I was there in 86 or 87 and pollution was not appreciable. In contrast, cities near me Denver (70's) and Syracuse NY (80's) could be spotted by a dome of smog (Syracuse much less so) well before you got there.
Some spots of Poland (mid 00's) were not nice in the spring (brown coal was used here and there for heat. The smoke was very nasty) Beijing in 01 was noticeably polluted, and the air was a bit of an irritant. I dare not go back there now (or Paris, I guess) with my asthma.
