looking for the pack rats again OM617 Engine Rebuild

I am finally putting my engine together, and realized a few things. One, some stuff got "lost" in the shuffle back and forth from the machinist. Second, all the fasteners are in one large box. Although none of these are show stoppers, they are PITAs.

I am looking for someone who has a junked engine and who has the cylinder head washers x22. I have 9 new ones, but I am thinking they are aftermarket since they appear pretty fat. So, I am looking for all 22.

Also, there are 5 bolts which hold the bank of 3 cam bearings and 2 cam bearings. My bolts ARE NOT hex bolts but regular bolts. Does anyone have the same set up. Engine is a late 1985. I will need those 5 washers at a minimum.

I should add there are 4 "hidden" bolts on the cylinder head which I am looking for. The ones which go inside or underneath the VC / cam cover are 20mm threaded length and the ones which are outside of the VC/cam cover are 25mm threaded length per the FSM. I found 2 which are 20mm (inside or underneath ones) but the other 2 are longer by a few mm's. In the FSM they are identified by the letter "A" instead of a # and they apparently do not play a part in the torque sequence relative to the head install.

The head bolts you describe are either incorrect or after market. The FSM (chapter 01-405) specifies just two types. Allen key type or triple squares. The newer triple square versions are the "necked" bolt type.

Check these bolts carefully (for reasons that I hope are obvious)!

The thicker washers are I think the new ones that go with the latest set of bolts you can buy from the dealer. These are too long - and Mercedes in their wisdom decided to sell you an extra thick washer to compensate for the "oh **** they're too long" cock up!

I have brand new head bolts. The other 4 bolts which are sometimes called the hidden bolts are not stretch bolts. I will take some close ups of those bolts shortly.

Question for Leathermang, Army, et al ... Are all the washers the same exact size? If so, then I will need 22-9 = 13 new ones.

OK, smarty pants ... "Stretch" ....

The parts' catalog says 9 washers per car ... however, there are 22 head bolts. Does anyone know? Also, are all 22 washers identical? I double checked PeachParts on-line catalog as well as a few others, and they all say 9 per car.

Does that help?

(Different washers for different bolt lengths)

Greazzer - If you have the dimensions (OD, ID, and thickness) there's a high probability that ARP will have them in their catalog. Their stuff is stouter than aviation grade so no worries about their appropriateness in this application. Worth a look.

Hi Stretch,

I have those bolts, brand new, all 22 of them. I ordered the correct ones. What I messed up on was not getting all the washers. The catalog says 9 per car and that is what I got, but in reality it is really 22. Compounding my situation is that all fasteners are in a box. Even after sorting everything, I am guessing I have almost all of them -- except all head washers and maybe the 2 hidden bolts which go outside of the VC/cam cover.

Having a washer a hair thicker than called for... not a problem...
but having one thinner.... risks the bolt bottoming out prematurely and thus not achieving the pull down on the gasket called for.
Engines should not be spec'd that closely... I am just pointing out the theory behind an error one way or the other..... same problem ... and happens more often.... when too long a bolt is put into a hole...

If you look at the numbering of the bolts I guess the number 9 came from the 615 990 02 12 set

The washers according to that other site that gives out (poor man's) EPC information specifies 22 washers all of the same number (So my assumption that you get different washers for different bolts isn't right)

110 016 04 67

This is a different number from the one you've got from "grown up" EPC - but with your full EPC access may be this number helps?

Army or Stretch is fine by me (but I can understand that some people might wonder what the heck is going on!)

The stock head bolt washers are quite thick.
