Leak from Valve Cover Bolts on W123
So I replaced the Valve Cover gasket and it is no longer leaking except for the the fact that when I turn on the my W123 sedan fresh oil leaks down from the two bolts on the left side (if you are looking at the engine from the front). Could it be that I do not have the original bolts? It has been really bugging me.

Which brand of VC gasket did you purchase?
When you tightened the bolts, did you use a torque wrench, or did you just do it by feel? And did you inspect the head surface to make sure there is no residue or foreign material along the sealing edge?

Not sure on yours but I found that my cam cover was warped a tad and would not seal. Should be a thread on that somewhere but for starters put the cover on a REALLY flat surface like a sheet of glass and see if a feeler gage will fit under it. Not sure how much is too much but I got mine down to where a 0.002" feeler didn't fit and it seals perfectly now.
On the studs - I used a thick washer under each nut and no leaks there either. It's hard to believe that any looseness would result in anything other than a leak at the cover/head interface. Dan |

Another thought is, the VC Bolts could have backed out some and that is the cause of the leak.
I had 2 that were loose. Removed them, blew out the holes with some car Cleaner. Then blew them out with compressed air. Be sure to place a rag over the hole before using the air and wear Safety Glasses. Before screwing them back in. used some Loc-Tite on the threads. Charlie sent from my pos computer
