om606 Head Torque sequence
A friend of mine is pulling the head on his 98 E300. We are at the stage of pulling the camshafts off but cannot find any document s as to the sequence of removing the camshaft bolts as well as the sequence to remove the head bolts. When I did my 603 head there were numerous illustrations laying out this procedure.
For the 606 head we have the procedure below but it does not tell which you should start with. Normally you would progress at opposite corners. Could anyone give some clarification as to the removal of which bolts in order for the camshafts bolts and the head bolts. Thanks The cams, cam support, and all tappets have to be removed to access the bolts. The torque spec is as follows. Stage 1. 15nm Stage 2. 35nm Stage 3. 90 deg torque angle. Stage 4. Wait 10 minutes. Stage 5. 90 deg torque angle.

I don't know on that particular engine but the basic guideline is this: When you torque the process is to lay the head out flat on the block by working from the center out in a basically circular pattern. The cam retaining bolts would be the same deal. Removing (un-torqueing if you will) is the opposite - you work from the outside in.
What you DON'T want to do is impart stress to the head by loosening the center first. Remember that the outside of the head would then be tight and the inside could "rise" slightly from the block. I've heard tales of that creating a head crack though I've never personally seen that - might be an old wives' tale. Dan |
