clunking when start a drive uphill,

Happy holidays,

My dear 300SDL got new engine mounts, transmission mount, diff. mount, flex disks,

rebuild drive shaft and balanced (wholesakeimportparts, $355+tex) ,

when going up hill, clunking noises from the rear for 3 seconds,

might try and put the old drive shaft back,

it just clunk when going off the center point, (probably got frozen needles,28 years )

center bearing is ok, rubber dry,

any clue, ideas, or similar,

differential does have 2 deg. play,

rest of the driving, is good, 80 mph, no problems

thanks in advance

reuven

If you had the DL rebuilt, what was actually done to it?

The U-Joint, and center support Bearing should have been replaces as well as the
two end bushings.

The Diffrentials will have some slop or movement aftr the miles some of these cars have. that is normal.

If this is from a stopped position on a hill. There are probably many things that could enable this. Was this evident as well before the driveshaft rebuild?

A good mechanic may be able to determine what it is by sound alone. Or post the sound on this site if recordable.

The splines are there just so you can remove the driveshaft.

I think an ill fitting flex disc or an improperly installed mount is the cause.

How tight did you tighten the coupling nut?

This might be your issue, as the nut is suppose to be tightened to 30nm. The spline is suppose to be lubed with about a tablespoon of grease and it isn't suppose to be super tight, as there needs to be some looseness to allow for the drive shaft to move in and out.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the below applies to all models with this nut..

I believe that the car should be on the wheels with the center coupling nut loose. Then snugged up. If you installed the new driveshaft in one piece as it came from the rebuilder and the center nut was tight. It is the probable issue.

I have considered the spline movement is there more to deal with production variances in required length more than anything else. I could be very wrong about that. Also the grease may be required on the splines for more than the obvious reason as well.

For example it could rust up really bad and be very hard to get apart over time with no grease. Another guess is it is required for the unit to adjust itself to the required initial length easier. The sequence used in installing the parts is perhaps another variable.

If the engine mounts etc where changed after the new driveshaft was installed The engine may have relocated slightly towards the front or back.

I was also thinking how one might attempt to localize the problem. But certain mounts where changed and first there is a procedure to do before tightening them down I think. Especially the front engine mounts. There is an upside to this problem though.

I think I would prefer to locate this problem over dealing with the car having a vibration issue after changing all you did.

I have many ideals on how I would try to locate the problem but much of the above would come first. It is just too early to go to them as well. If the thread prolongs with things checked and the need is still there I will post them.

Other members of course may have better ideals. Hopefully the problem will solve easily.
