6 Speed manual?

I heard tales of a 6 speed manual transmission that will work with a 300 motor. Has anybody else heard of this? If not is there any manual transmissions other than from a 240 that i could use?

If you are not opposed to a little work, a 5-spd from a W201 or W124 will fit
in a W123.
How to adapt a W201 5-speed to OM616/OM617 applications

Some of the problems with trying to install a trans from another model or make,
is where the shift lever comes out of the Transmission. You will notice the MB has 3
rods from the trans to the shifter. You don`t want the shift lever coming up through the Dash.
A lot of trans have the shifter coming out of the top, the MB is on the side. As far as the 123, 124 & 201.

You are right, but only a W124 300. Chassis is important.

When thinking about a swap ..... if the object is to provide some overdrive effect... the trans needs to be investigated.... some do provide overdrive in the highest gear... some have just divided the rpms by more gears.....

Agreed. I'd like overdrive, and lock-up TC in an automatic, but have no use for more gears without the higher final-drive.

AFAIK, 2:65:1 is the tallest rear diff in these cars, so nowhere to go there.

x2 which is the most annoying thing ever to drive. I'll take a 3 speed with a good final drive ratio over a 6 speed that's always in & out

Note that the OP, who has not returned, did not specify either chassis or engine.

And what would "these cars" be exactly?
210mm final drives were supplied as tall as 2.24:1!

These cars would be '80s-'90s Mercedes, ... and the AFAIK covers the rest.

I honestly wouldn't bother even trying to swap a 6-speed behind a 240D. It's just such an outdated engine and platform that I don't see what the additional gear would provide that a 5-speed can't do well enough.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I love the 240D, the 6-speed just doesn't seem congruous with the character of the rest of the car. If you really want something with a 6-speed level of refinement, you might well also find yourself happier with a newer car

The 4sp always had me reaching for imaginary 5th, but I can imagine it bogging above 60 or so.

I used to have a 35 mile each way rural commute. It was great to have that 240D up around 80 for a good stretch weekly.

I REALLY want to install a 6th gear in my 190... I'm always reaching for 6th, knowing it's not there...

I'd like to smooth the ratios between third and fourth also... Too big a jump... Third should be a bit taller... Of course, then I'd likely complain 2nd to third is too big a jump... But I doubt it.

Sometimes I search for 6th on my Ranger. It just makes grinding noises though.
