i need tires... help... please....
i noticed the tires on my 92 300d were quite dry rotted, like, i can see the cracks in between the tread lines. we are going on a trip around christmas so i would like to get new tires before then.
2 questions: can i get some opinions on what you guys think are the best tires for quietness and long lasting tread? im not really concerned about snow or ice traction, but hydroplaning resistance would also be nice. secondly, the car has on it 195/65 15s. on other cars, i have put a little wider tires on with good results. is that ok to do on our cars? by litte wider, i mean like a 205 width.

I run summers on my 92 124 - 205 60 15 and for winter 195 65 15. I much prefer the 205's. Costco is da place!

205/60R15 is the way to go. I'm quite happy with my Cooper CS3s. Made in Merica, none of that French surrender monkey garbage on my car.

I just bought four Michelin 195/70R14s for my 240D at Tire rack. Cost about $330 after mail in rebate for four tires. I've never been unhappy with Michelins. I also have a set of Hancooks on my Mitsubishi. Those are good so far. about 2/3 the cost of Michelins.

Yeah, I'm a big Costco/Michelin fan but I've had good luck with the Kumhos' on the wife's 210. They were on it when we bought it and they were quiet and wore like iron......but I did replace them with Michelins' when it was time.

Yokohama Avid Touring S on my 1985 300D. America's Tire stepped me up to them for no extra when they didn't have the budget set I reserved. Seem OK and the straight channels look nice. My 1985 has a set from Sears (General or such). They were the only place avail that Sunday before my son left w/ short notice. Both sets were ~$400 w/ balance, stems, & hazard warranty. If a tire isn't shaking or whining, I'm not sure I could tell a difference, but then I wasn't an audiophile in the 1970's either.

Now, to actually post something useful.
What tire do you want? It depends on what you want from the tire. If you want the most comfortable ride above all else, the Goodyear Assurance ComforTred is a good choice. If you want responsive handling and don't mind a little more noise/ride discomfort, you'd be better off with a high-performance all-season or summer tire. I would figure out what qualities you want from the tire and shop around for something that will match them. Tire Rack and Consumer Reports are good places for research...

Speedometer error would be 1.2%, negligible.

I'm a huge fan of the Michelin tires I run on all of my cars. Costco or Sam's Club usually has the best prices.
