OK, just replaced the upper control arm and ball joints on both sides of the 1984 300DT. Sometimes when turning, (I seem to notice it more when in reverse) I can hear a slight "swoosh" sound coming from the right front. I'm thinking bad shock? Any ideas??

Usually they make a clunk or creaking noise. The power steering will make a swooshing noise when you turn all the way to lock.

Did you manually compress those shocks before installing them?
Did you read any instructions which came with them ?

The shocks are at least twenty years old, maybe older so I do not know or remember how they were installed.

You did not mention that..
20 year old shocks need to be replaced.
