throttle adjustment FSM question
Was flipping through the FSM looking at throttle adjustment.
The FSM lists model 123.193 first version and second version. My vehicle is model 123.153. Not sure which chapter to look at. The other chapters list models 116.120, and 123.1 So which corresponds to my vehicle? Each chapter has different lengths for the linkages. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, |

123.153 is the 300CD Turbo, 123.193 is the 300TD Turbo. There should be no difference between the linkages -- all W123 turbodiesels are the same from the firewall forward (this includes all linkages).

so now the big question:
how can you differentiate between version 1 and version 2? and why is there a separate chapter for 123.1 apart from the 12.193 chapter? thanks |

There are at least a half a dozen different linkage setups threw the model runs of the w123 chassis. The best thing to do is to look at your linkage setup and then compare that to the diagrams in the manual. Then simply id the rods you are looking at adjusting and match them to the diagram and adjust using the size provided.

but what I do know in reading the FSM... is that most things in the engine compartment have at least three changes over their lifetime... they just kept trying to improve them I guess... or perhaps they did not know the meaning of ' leave well enough alone '... lol

If I had to guess why they re engineered the linkages so much, it would be for the egr/alda/smog stuff that came along, vacuum controlled transmission from formally rod controlled and cable to linkage controlled cruise control. In the eyes of an engineer, it was easier to redesign instead of modify. I would also imagine it could have been do to supplier/manufacturers of parts. Possible there were issues with that....At the end will never really know why...

Do you know if there were differences within the turbos or just between different engines? Except for the 1985, there were no real changes for the OM617.952-engined cars that I can think of.
EDIT: Except for the 1981 wagon? Geez...

There shouldn't be a difference between the turbo and non turbo linkages. As there is no linkage needed to control the turbo. As in my euro, it was made for the 83 model year and it pretty much has the same linkage as in the 83 turbo. They just didn't install the rest of the linkage to control cruise, egr etc. It pretty munch comes from the mount, to the valve cover and to the ip. But the non turbo euro models don't have the stop lever, it is integrated into the injection pump.....All 240D's auto's should have the same linkage as the 300D's of that same year as well....
There are differences between them all, as I said...it depends on what all needs to be controlled, years etc...Its what best described as a "cluster****"...Its even worse when someone swaps in a different year/model engine...

UH... my 240 is missing a cylinder at the back... near the firewall.... you don't think that might cause the linkage to be different from the 300d of that same year ?
