Interesting Aero Benz

Thought you guys might dig this pic. It's the cover shot from this month's SAE magazine and shows an experimental aero exercise from Stuttgart. There are all sort of groovy bits like wheels that go from more or less 5 spokes to essentially Moon discs at speed. The body itself is a shape-shifter, deploying various aero tricks once up to speed. Cd is 0.19 - that's REALLY slippery.

To US readers - you might see if you agree with me that the overall profile is really close to the original Olds Aurora (a really pretty 4 door sedan). I don't know what other markets got them though Canada is a good guess.

Don't place your order - no plans for production at this time, just a prototype shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The best I could do was take a pic of the cover - sorry it's not better quality.

Dan

The latest issue of the Star, the MBCA magazine, has an article on the car.

The C111-III was powered by a 230 horsepower (170 kW) @ 4,500rpm straight-5 OM617 turbodiesel which broke nine diesel and gas speed records. With more aerodynamic bodywork that gave it an air drag coefficient of .191, the C111 eventually reached 200 mph (322 km/h) at Narḍ in 1978, and averaged 14.7mpg@ 316 km/h (195.4 mph) over a 12-hour cruise.

Let's see the new one set some long distance speed records like the old days where concept cars proved themselves in the real world.

Interesting. But the one I posted is both pretty and potentially practical as a real-world driveable car. Different cars, different purposes. I'd love to put a modern hemi in either one and go LSR racing! (I can hear the gasps from here!)

I very much liked looking at the auroras. Don't see them too often any more. Cd reported as .32. For comparison W123 reported as .43, W201 reported as .33, W124 .28, W126 .34-.36, W210 .26-.29 (various sources). So the improvements stopped coming easy a while ago.

The impressive thing about the c111 was that there was a spacious cabin in it that would have provided room for two comfortably.

I've always been curious what exactly MB did to the 617 in the C111... would be interesting to know..

Not a lie, just Cd with all vents and windows closed. The driver and passenger can endure a good 20 minutes in this condition, more if it's cloudy and cool.

Dude99 raises a good point. They're claiming about twice the usual power output, so how did they get there? Are there bits and tricks we can use? Sure the aero is a significant source for the top speed readings but how did they get the power to that level?

I know folks have squeezed a lot more out of a 617 but Mercedes probably did it in a durable way so it would be great to know their formula.

IIRC there are photos of the 617 based C111 engine and it has a big honking turbo on it.
