617 in a w114 with 4sp

heyo peaches,
im thinking of putting a 617 5cyl turbodiesel in a w114 280 sedan. the motor in that is trash and i love these 617s so much... at the same time i plan to put the tranny from a 240d onto the back of the turbodiesel.

has anyone done this? anyone know of any major issues i might run into? anything helps....

Thanks, Jack

Oil filter canister is a big issue you'll run into.

Interested to see how this goes.

If you can find a w115 300D, it wouldn't be that hard but with out major surgery it will be very difficult fitting a om617 turbo in there....I think the fuel tank will also need to be changed but I can't be certain on that.

Of course you'll likely need a custom driveshaft.

A 240D flywheel will do if you don't want to use the legit 617 flywheel. It'll be a bit buzzier with the 240D flywheel since it's lighter.

You'd need to be sure you have oil pan to swaybar clearance.

Transmission mount may need to be custom made.

JB3 actually has a project car like this... a W115 240D that he is trying to swap an OM617 into. Here is the thread:

A few years ago some wag opined that if you were to give a Frenchman a piece of sheetmetal, he would do something foolish with it; et voila', le Deux Chevaux!!

That same tendency to foolishness persists.

Don't be dissuaded if that's what you want. When I floated the idea of putting a 617 in a 107 the consensus was that it would never work for a myriad of reasons and was a really dumb idea. Well not only did it work but it proved to be an ideal project for a first time swapper. Once the project got started the forum was very helpful and supportive. Now three years and almost a 100k miles later my little project is a proven success.

Your swap may be easier than you think as the W114 came with the 617NA engine. If you can find the engine support arms it should be a bolt in. The thing that made my swap so easy (relatively speaking) is that the same front subframe was used in the 107s too. Read my build thread - everything is documented. It will probably provide lots of tips and tricks for yours.

Take lots of measurements, read the swap threads, and decide whether you have the skills, tools, time, money and perseverance to get it done. It can be done - the question is whether it's worth it...to you.

And if you do it, start a build thread and share your issues and solutions.

thanks for the encouragement. i really hope to put a turbo 617 if i can make the room, if not i will have to do with the NA.

ive got all of that except the money. I am 16 and a full time student and rower, but ive got weekends and nights. i really want to make this work.

once i get my parts ill start a build thread and see what i can do. thanks

Ha, I just passed through Sacramento 2 hours ago on Amtrak (returning from a quick cruise from LA to Vancouver).

You'll probably need to get the early smooth upper oil pan or be prepared to mill some of the waffling off the turbo pan for subframe clearance. Even so you'll probably need to fab some 1/2 inch spacers for the subframe and 1/2 inch spacers for the motor mounts. Even so you'll be tight and need to fill your motor mounts to prevent collapse. As mentioned you'll likely need the oil filter canister from a 126 and the oil lines as well though you may still need to remote it. I'd suggest keeping the auto trans and do the manual swap as a phase II project. You'll need to sort out stuff like tach, shutdown and a host of other little stuff. Since you've got the car you can start taking measurements and collecting bits. I've got an engine with a bad block and head and tranny if you want to make a trip to San Diego to pick up. That way you could get everything mocked up while you're waiting for the perfect deal on an engine when you already know it will work.

Before doing anything rash, look at this example of what you wish to accomplish. It's in the Cars for Sale section of this forum, and located in Fresno:
1975 Mercedes 300d w115 California
